Security Lighting

Security lighting lights up the outside of a home or business after dark, so you can see who is there and your cameras can record a clearer picture. This range includes LED floodlights, wall lights and lanterns, and the motion and light sensors that switch them on. Brands include Brackenheath and Zinc.

Types of security light

  • LED floodlights light a wide area such as a driveway, yard or car park. We stock them from 10W to 300W, including the Brackenheath iSpot and Rex Slim ranges and the Zinc Otley and Rye ranges. Higher wattage gives more light for bigger areas.
  • Wall lights and lanterns light a doorway, path or porch, and look more decorative on a house front.
  • Sensors switch lights you already have. PIR sensors react to body heat and movement, and microwave sensors detect movement through their own signal. Surface, corner, recessed and twin-sensor versions are available.
  • Rechargeable flood lamps (10W and 20W) with a tripod stand, for temporary lighting on site.

PIR, photocell or always on?

Many lights here come in more than one version, so check the product name:

  • PIR means the light switches on when it senses movement, then off again after a set time. Good for paths and doors.
  • Photocell (dusk to dawn) means the light switches on when it gets dark and off at daylight. Good for areas you want lit all night.
  • Standard versions have no sensor and are switched by you, a timer or a separate sensor.

Security lighting for CCTV

Most cameras switch to infrared at night and record in black and white. Good lighting helps cameras show more detail, and colour night-vision cameras use light to keep a colour image. If you want the camera and the light in one unit, see floodlight cameras.

When you place a light, aim it at the area the camera watches, not straight into the lens, or the picture can wash out. Think about neighbours too: angle floodlights downwards so they do not shine into nearby homes or the road.
