A video intercom system lets you see and speak to a visitor before you open the door. It has two main parts: a door station outside, with a camera, speaker and call button, and an indoor station (a screen inside) or a phone app. Many systems can also release an electric door lock, which is why intercoms sit in our access control range. Which video intercom system do I need?
- Villa kit: one door station and one indoor station, boxed together for a single house. Kits are available from Hikvision, HiLook, Dahua and Uniview.
- Villa door station: one to four call buttons, with the indoor stations you choose. Suits a house or a small shared entrance.
- Modular door station: built up from modules for blocks of flats. The Hikvision KD8 range has nametag (call button), keypad, card-reader, display and hearing-aid loop modules, with mounting frames and rain shields.
- Apartment door stations with a screen or keypad, and face-recognition door stations, for larger entrances.
IP or 2-wire?
IP intercoms use a network cable (Cat5e or Cat6), which usually carries power too (PoE). Choose IP for new cabling. 2-wire intercoms run over a single pair of wires. If a building already has an old intercom with a pair of wires to each flat, a 2-wire system can upgrade it without new cable runs. Hikvision and Dahua both offer 2-wire kits and parts.
Indoor stations
Indoor stations here range from 4.3-inch to 10.1-inch screens. Some connect by Wi-Fi as well as cable, some run Android, and some have a handset. Some can also be answered from a phone app (for example HiLook models with Hik-Connect), so you can see who is at the door when you are out; check the listing for the model you choose.
