Who is it for?

A PTZ pans, tilts and zooms under control, so one camera can cover an area that would otherwise need several. It suits large yards, car parks, forecourts and industrial sites where an operator or an automatic tour needs to follow activity rather than watch a fixed frame.

Fit fixed cameras alongside a PTZ on entrances and gates. A PTZ pointed elsewhere records nothing at the spot that matters, so the fixed cameras provide the constant evidence while the PTZ investigates.

Choosing the right PTZ

• Optical zoom is what counts — digital zoom simply enlarges pixels. Higher optical zoom reaches further, but a very long zoom on a small site is wasted money.
• Resolution determines how much detail survives at full zoom.
• Night performance. Check the infrared or white-light range matches the distance you actually need to see.
• Mounting. PTZs are heavy and need a proper bracket — wall, corner, pole or pendant to suit the position.

What you will need

• A recorder that supports PTZ control at the camera’s resolution.
• Adequate power. PTZs draw more than fixed cameras — often PoE+ rather than standard PoE, or a dedicated supply.
• The correct mounting bracket for the position.
• Signage. If your cameras capture anything beyond your boundary you are a data controller under UK GDPR and must display a notice.
