Hikvision DS-2CD23166G3-I2UY 16MP AcuSense Fixed Turret Camera

The Hikvision DS-2CD23166G3-I2UY is a 16MP turret — but the useful thing about it is not that it sees further than the 12MP model. It sees taller.

Where the extra pixels actually go

Compare the two sensors:

Both are 4608 pixels wide. DORI measures horizontal pixel density, so the identification distance is identical — 11 metres at 2.8mm, 14 metres at 4mm. The extra four megapixels are entirely vertical.

Which makes it the right camera for specific shapes

A 4:3 image is what you want where the scene is tall rather than wide:

• Corridors and aisles — floor to ceiling, all the way down
• Stairwells — several flights in one view
• Tall shop frontages or a doorway plus the approach to it
• Narrow alleys and passages between buildings

In those positions a widescreen camera wastes half its pixels on walls. Here you get 69.9° of vertical coverage against 51.1° — a third more scene height.

If your scene is wide rather than tall — a car park, a forecourt, a yard — the 12MP model is the better buy. It costs less, records faster and covers the same identification distance.

The trade-off: frame rate

16MP records at 12.5fps (50Hz). That is noticeably below full motion, and the honest limit of this camera. Your options:

• 4608 × 2592 at 20fps — the 12MP crop
• 4K, 3200 × 1800, 4MP or 1080p at a full 25fps

For a corridor or stairwell where you want maximum detail and people move at walking pace, 12.5fps is fine. For a till, a doorway or anywhere movement is quick, drop the resolution and take the frame rate.

Low light and detection

The 1/1.8" sensor — the same large format as the 12MP — holds colour to 0.0008 lux with Powered-by-DarkFighter, with 30m infrared beyond that. AcuSense classifies people and vehicles on the camera, with line crossing, intrusion, region entrance and exit, plus face capture.

Worth knowing before you order

Minimum focus is 2.9 metres. Mounted directly above a doorway at head height the image will be soft — this camera wants standoff.

Check your NVR supports 16MP. Many recorders stop at 8MP or 12MP. Ask us and we will confirm before you order.

The lens is fixed — no Z in the model number. Choose 2.8mm or 4mm before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Is 16MP better than 12MP?

Not for distance — both identify at 11 metres, because both are 4608 pixels wide. 16MP gives you a taller 4:3 image, which is better for corridors and stairwells and worse for wide open areas.

Why only 12.5fps?

16MP is a very large frame. Step down to 12MP for 20fps or 4K for 25fps if motion matters more than maximum detail.

What is it best used for?

Tall, narrow scenes — corridors, aisles, stairwells, alleys, tall frontages — where a widescreen camera would waste pixels on the walls.

Does it need a special recorder?

One that supports 16MP. Check before ordering; many do not.

How close can it focus?

2.9 metres at 2.8mm, 3.5 metres at 4mm.
