The Hikvision DS-2CD2346G3-IZ2UY is a 4MP AcuSense turret from the current G3 generation, with a motorised lens, twin microphones and the most useful specification Hikvision publishes — and almost nobody quotes.

The numbers that actually tell you what you'll see

Resolution alone does not tell you whether you will recognise a face. DORI does — the European standard (EN 62676-4) for how far a camera can Detect, Observe, Recognise and Identify. Hikvision publishes it for this model, so here it is:

Read the bottom row carefully. A 4MP camera identifies an unknown face at under eight metres. Beyond that you get useful footage, but not the kind that identifies a stranger to a court's satisfaction.

Set the zoom from your desk

The 2.8–4mm motorised lens is adjusted remotely rather than by hand at the camera. It is a short range — this is a wide-angle camera either way, 99.3° down to 80° — but it means you fine-tune the framing after mounting without going back up a ladder, and again whenever the view needs changing.

AcuSense, and what it actually does

Deep-learning classification runs on the camera, separating people and vehicles from leaves, headlights, rain and animals. That matters in two ways: alarms fire for things that matter, and recordings can be searched by object type rather than scrubbed through by time.

It supports line crossing, intrusion, region entrance and region exit, each able to trigger on humans or vehicles specifically, plus face capture.

Two microphones, not one

An arrayed dual-microphone array with environment noise filtering — better at picking speech out of background noise than the single mic usual at this price. Audio compression includes AAC-LC and MP3 as well as the standard G.711.

Footage that survives a network drop

The card slot takes up to 512GB, and with ANR the camera keeps recording locally whenever the link to the NVR fails, then back-fills the gap when it returns. With a high-end Hikvision card it also supports card encryption and health detection — the card warns you before it fails rather than after.

Worth knowing before you order

The zoom range is narrow. 2.8–4mm is a wide-angle camera at both ends. If you need reach — a car park row, a long yard — a 2.8–12mm model gives far more range. Ask us and we will point you at one.

It is a gigabit port on a camera that peaks at 8 Mbps. No practical benefit today; useful headroom on a switch you may reuse later.

Frequently asked questions

How far away can it identify someone?

6.7 metres at 2.8mm, 7.9 metres at 4mm, to the EN 62676-4 identification standard. Beyond that the footage is still useful — you will see what happened — but it will not identify a stranger to evidential standard.

What does the motorised lens give me?

Remote zoom and focus from the recorder, so you can adjust the framing after installation without returning to the camera.

Do I need AcuSense cameras for people and vehicle detection?

On an IP system, yes — the analysis runs in the camera. This is an AcuSense model, so it does it itself.

What is ANR?

Automatic Network Replenishment. With a memory card fitted, the camera keeps recording if the network drops and fills the gap in the NVR's footage once it returns.

Will it work with a non-Hikvision NVR?

Yes — ONVIF Profile S and G are supported, so most recorders and VMS platforms will take it. Hikvision recorders integrate most fully and are needed for some analytics.
