Hikvision DS-96256NXI-S16R - 256 Channel 16 Bay AcuSense NVR

The Hikvision DS-96256NXI-S16R is a 256-channel S-Series AcuSense NVR with sixteen SATA bays, RAID with N+M hot spare, and up to 1280 Mbps of incoming bandwidth.

This is where the S-Series differs from the NI-badged Super NVRs alongside it. As well as recording 256 cameras, it runs facial recognition, perimeter protection, video structuralisation and AcuSearch on the recorder itself.

On an estate-scale system that matters: the alternative is recording everything and having no practical way to find anything in it. AcuSearch lets footage be searched by what appeared in it rather than by time.

Eight IP speakers — deterrence, not just recording

It connects up to eight IP speakers, so the analytics can trigger a spoken warning rather than only logging an event. On a yard, a car park or a perimeter after hours, challenging someone as they cross a line is usually more useful than reviewing the footage next morning.

Few recorders at this scale offer it, and it is easy to miss on a specification sheet.

Storage built to keep going

Sixteen SATA bays with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10, plus N+M hot spare — spare disks sit in the chassis and take over automatically when one fails, so the array rebuilds without a site visit. Across sixteen disks running continuously, that is the difference between a maintenance ticket and an emergency.

What you'll need with it

• Hard drives — none are supplied. Sixteen bays. RAID 6 with hot spares is the sensible configuration at this size, since a rebuild across sixteen large disks takes days. Talk to us about sizing rather than using a calculator.
• Substantial PoE switching for 256 cameras.
• IP speakers if you want the audio deterrence — up to eight, and we can specify them with you.
• Rack space, cooling and ideally a UPS.

How does it differ from the DS-96256NI-H16R?

Both are 256-channel with sixteen bays and 1280 Mbps. This S-Series model adds on-board analytics — facial recognition, AcuSearch, video structuralisation — and IP speaker support. The H16R is the choice if you want raw recording capacity and four 2.5G network ports without the AI.

What is N+M hot spare?

Spare disks held in the chassis that take over automatically when a drive fails, so the array rebuilds without anyone attending site.

Do the analytics need particular cameras?

AcuSearch works best with AcuSense cameras that have the function enabled. Send us your camera list and we will confirm what will and will not work.

Does it come with hard drives?
