The Hikvision DS-2CD6984G1/VR-U/NFC is a 32MP VR camera that sees a complete sphere — 360 degrees horizontally and 360 degrees vertically, at 7680 × 3840.

A sphere, not a hemisphere

This is the distinction worth understanding. A fisheye covers 180° × 180° — everything below the ceiling it is mounted on, but nothing above or behind. Our 32MP PanoVu covers 185° horizontally.

This covers everything. There is no direction it cannot see, no mounting orientation that creates a blind spot, and nothing behind it. Mount it on a pole in the middle of a space and it records the entire sphere around itself.

The output is 7680 × 3840 — the standard 2:1 equirectangular format used for VR and immersive video, so it plays in any viewer that handles 360° footage and can be explored in any direction after the fact.

Where a full sphere earns its money

• Open spaces with no obvious mounting wall — atria, concourses, marquees, plant rooms
• Evidential recording where "what was behind the camera" gets asked — the answer is always in the file
• Incident review and training, where an investigator can look anywhere afterwards
• Sites that change — you never have to re-aim it, because there is no direction to aim at

Fibre optic and NFC

Alongside gigabit copper there is an FC fibre optic interface taking an SFP module — single mode, 1250 Mbps, up to 20 kilometres. That puts it well beyond Ethernet's 100-metre limit, on sites where running copper is not an option.

NFC allows setup by tapping a phone against the camera, which is genuinely useful on a unit that may be installed somewhere awkward to reach with a laptop.

What it will and will not do

Identification range is 4.6 metres (detect 46m, observe 18.3m, recognise 9.2m). Spreading 32MP across an entire sphere is what does that — it is better than a fisheye, but this is an awareness and evidence camera, not an identification camera. Put a conventional camera at the door if you need to know who.

There is no infrared. It works to 0.002 lux in colour, so it needs some ambient light. In genuine darkness it will not see.

It has no PoE. Power is 12V DC or 24V AC only, at up to 14.4W — so a local power supply is needed at the camera position. That is an unusual requirement and worth planning for before installation.

Analytics are minimal. Exception and network events only — no line crossing, no intrusion, no people counting. This camera records; it does not analyse.

IP66, not IP67, and no impact rating. Weather-resistant but not for positions where it may be struck.

Frequently asked questions

Does it really see in every direction?

Yes — 360° horizontally and 360° vertically. There is no blind spot in any orientation, which no fisheye or panoramic camera can claim.

Can I watch it on an ordinary monitor?

Yes. The 7680 × 3840 equirectangular output plays in any viewer that handles 360° video, and you navigate within the sphere. It is also viewable as a flat panorama.

Does it need PoE?

No — and it will not accept it. Power must be 12V DC or 24V AC at the camera, so plan a local supply.

How far can it identify someone?

4.6 metres. It is built for complete situational awareness rather than identification — pair it with a conventional camera where you need faces.

Does it work in the dark?

Not without ambient light. There is no infrared, though it is sensitive down to 0.002 lux.
