This is the M2 series, and it is worth being careful here: several UK listings for this exact model still quote the previous I-series figures — 4K output, 8 MP cameras, 160 Mbps. Those numbers are wrong for the M2. The genuine specification, from Hikvision's own datasheet, is 8K output, cameras up to 32 MP and 256 Mbps incoming bandwidth. If you are comparing quotes, make sure you are comparing the same generation.

Who is it for?

Sites running up to sixteen cameras from one recorder that also powers them — a commercial unit, a school block, a yard with perimeter coverage. Sixteen PoE ports at a 200 W budget means no separate switch and no power required at each camera position.

The bandwidth is the number that matters. At 256 Mbps incoming it takes sixteen high-resolution streams without throttling them, where the older 16-channel recorders ran at 160 Mbps and forced you to drop frame rate or resolution once the system filled up. On a site that will grow into all sixteen channels, that headroom is the difference between usable evidence and stuttering footage.

What you'll need with it

• Hard drives — none are supplied. Two SATA bays, up to 16 TB each. Use surveillance-rated drives such as WD Purple; desktop drives are not built for continuous writing and fail early. Size them with our CCTV storage calculator — across sixteen channels the difference between 30 and 60 days of retention is substantial.
• Cameras within the 200 W PoE budget. Comfortable for sixteen standard cameras, but PTZs, heaters and illuminators draw considerably more — send us your camera models and we will total it.
• Cat6 to each camera, and a screen with HDMI or VGA for local viewing.

Frequently asked questions

Does it come with hard drives?

No. It takes two SATA drives up to 16 TB each, supplied separately. Budget for these when comparing prices — some listings quote a recorder price against a competitor's price that includes a drive.

Can I view it on my phone?

Yes. Hik-Connect on iOS and Android gives live view, playback and alerts, and iVMS-4200 does the same from a PC. Both are free.

Will it work with my existing cameras?

It supports Hikvision cameras and third-party cameras over ONVIF 2.5. Send us your models and we will confirm before you order.

How does it differ from the DS-7616NI-I2/16P it replaces?

More bandwidth (256 Mbps against 160), cameras up to 32 MP rather than 12 MP, 8K rather than 4K HDMI output, and a considerably stronger security specification.

Is the security specification worth anything in practice?

On a site that has to satisfy an insurer or a network security policy, yes. EN 303645 compliance, 802.1X and signed firmware are exactly what gets asked about when CCTV goes onto a corporate or school network.
