This is the black version of Hikvision's full-size 8 MP ColorVu bullet. Electronically identical to the white model: a 1/1.8" sensor at 3840 × 2160 behind an F1.0 lens, with Smart Hybrid Light — white light and infrared out to 60 m — so the camera records in full colour at night rather than switching to monochrome. Only the finish differs.

The best-matched ColorVu camera for long views

At 2.8 mm the DORI figures are detect 89 m, observe 35 m, recognise 17 m, identify 8 m, and the supplement light reaches 60 m. Most of the compact ColorVu models pair 30 m or 40 m of light with similar optics, so their useful night range falls well short of what the lens resolves. This one comes close to matching.

For a driveway, yard perimeter or approach road with no lighting of its own, that pairing is what matters more than the megapixel count. A 4 mm version narrows the view to 93.3° and pushes identification to about 10 m.

Why specify black

At 286.7 mm and 1,200 g this is a substantial camera, so the finish does real work. Against dark brickwork, exposed steelwork, a black fascia or a slate soffit it recedes where a white body of this size would dominate the elevation. Where the camera is meant to be seen as a deterrent, white does that better.

Colour at night — how Hybrid Light works

Three modes: infrared (covert, monochrome), white light (full colour, visibly lit, doubles as a deterrent), and Smart Hybrid — infrared until an event is detected, then white light and colour. That third mode avoids the two usual complaints: a permanently lit camera annoying neighbours, or a monochrome clip that identifies nothing.

What it does not have

No audio at all. No microphone, no speaker, no audio or alarm terminal block — Ethernet, microSD and reset key are the only interfaces. The LIY designation means light and imaging only. For audio, a siren or alarm terminals, the DS-2CD2T87G3-LIS2UY/SL adds all three, at the cost of needing 802.3at rather than af.

8 MP or 4 MP — the honest comparison

The 4 MP DS-2CD2T47G3-LIY is the same housing with the same 60 m light, but reaches 0.0001 lux against this camera's 0.0005 lux, because the same sensor is split across half as many pixels. Choose 8 MP for reach and detail, 4 MP for genuinely dark scenes. Storage doubles too — 16 Mbps against 8.

Frequently asked questions

Is the black version any different to the white one?

Only the finish. Sensor, lens, light, analytics and power draw are identical.

Does it really record in colour at night?

Yes, when the white light is active. In infrared mode it records in black and white. Smart Hybrid switches automatically on an event.

Does it have a microphone or siren?

Neither. This model has no audio hardware at all. The LIS2UY/SL version adds microphones, a 120 dB speaker and alarm terminals.

Is it better in the dark than the 4 MP version?

No. The 4 MP reaches 0.0001 lux against this camera's 0.0005 lux. Choose 8 MP for reach and detail.
