Which coax for which job

• CCTV (HD-TVI, HD-CVI, AHD and legacy analogue) — RG59B/U 75 ohm, black 100 m reel, also in white and per metre. RG59 is the standard cable for HD analogue cameras; a 4 MP or 5 MP HD-TVI signal will run around 300 m on good RG59 with a copper core. If you also need to power the camera, the combined RG59 + 2-core power flex saves a second run.
• Satellite and aerial distribution — 1.00 mm conductor satellite coax in 200 m and 250 m reels, the low-loss 75 ohm cable for dish, aerial and TV distribution.
• Legacy 75 ohm — URM70 for like-for-like replacement on older installations.
• 50 ohm radio and antenna feeders — RG58C/U for short patch runs, URM67 and RG213/U for longer, lower-loss feeders.

Connectors and tools

RG59 terminates with a BNC crimp or twist-on plug — we stock Excel BNC crimp plugs, twist-on plugs and crimp BNCs in boxes of 100, plus ratchet crimp pliers and a coax stripper. Couplers and adapters are in cabling accessories.

Should I run coax or Cat5e/Cat6?

If you are wiring a new CCTV system, run Cat5e or Cat6 instead: it carries an IP camera's video and PoE power on one cable and can be reused for HD analogue with baluns if you ever change your mind. Coax is the right choice when you are extending or repairing an existing analogue system, or upgrading old analogue cameras to HD-TVI without recabling.
