Choosing a monitor

• Continuous duty. Monitors intended for CCTV use are rated for 24/7 operation. A domestic television is not, and running one constantly shortens its life considerably faster than a purpose-built unit.
• Direct recorder connection. Match the monitor’s HDMI or VGA inputs to the outputs on your NVR or DVR, and check the recorder supports the resolution you are buying — a 4K monitor gains nothing if the recorder only outputs 1080p.
• Screen size for the room. A single monitor showing a 16-camera grid needs to be considerably larger than one showing four cameras, or individual images become too small to be useful.

One monitor or several?

A single monitor cycling through camera views or showing a grid suits most reception desks and small control points. Multiple monitors or a video wall are for larger sites where operators need to watch several full-size feeds at once — this needs a recorder or video management system that supports multiple simultaneous outputs, so check that before buying the screens.
