The Hikvision iDS-9016HUHI-M8/S is a 16-channel Ultra Series AcuSense DVR with eight drive bays in a 2U chassis — the flagship coax recorder, bought for retention rather than channel count.

Eight bays on sixteen cameras — that is the point

This is an unusual specification and worth understanding. Sixteen channels is a modest camera count, but eight SATA bays at up to 12TB each gives 96TB raw — more storage per camera than anything else in the DVR range.

It exists for sites where footage must be kept for a long time: licensed premises with retention conditions, anywhere with an audit requirement, or operations where an incident may not surface for months. If you need many cameras rather than long retention, a 32-channel model costs less and suits better.

Read this before you plan the channels

Perimeter protection runs on 8 channels, fixed to channels 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12. A camera on channels 5 to 8 or 13 to 16 gets no perimeter analysis — though people-and-vehicle Motion Detection 2.0 does run on every analogue channel by default.

On a sixteen-camera system that is half your inputs, so plan the channel map before the install. We will work through it with you.

Sixteen audio inputs — rare, and the reason some buyers choose it

Most DVRs offer one or four RCA audio inputs. This has sixteen, one per channel, plus two audio outputs. For interview rooms, custody suites, reception desks or anywhere audio is recorded alongside video, that removes the usual compromise entirely.

What you'll need with it

• Hard drives — none are supplied. Eight bays at up to 12TB. At this scale talk to us about sizing rather than using a calculator — and buy drives from the same batch where you can.
• A channel plan, so cameras needing perimeter analysis sit on channels 1–4 or 9–12.
• 2U of rack space, proper cooling and ideally a UPS. Eight spinning disks generate real heat.

Frequently asked questions

Why only 16 channels with 8 drive bays?

Because it is built for retention, not camera count. Ninety-six terabytes across sixteen cameras is many months of footage — the point of the machine.

Which channels support perimeter protection?

Channels 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12 only. Other channels record normally, with people-and-vehicle motion detection still active.

Can it record audio on every camera?

Yes — sixteen RCA audio inputs, one per channel. Very few recorders at any price offer that.

How many cameras in total?

Up to 50 — sixteen on coax plus up to thirty-four IP at 12MP.

Does it come with hard drives?

No. Eight SATA drives up to 12TB each, supplied separately.
