This is the black version of Hikvision's 16 MP G3 turret. Electronically it is identical to the white model: a 1/1.8" sensor at 4608 × 3456, 130 dB WDR, AcuSense classification and arrayed dual microphones, in the same compact all-metal housing as the rest of the range. Only the finish differs.

Read this before choosing 16 MP over 12 MP

The obvious assumption is that 16 MP sees further or in more detail than the 12 MP DS-2CD23126G3. It does not. Both sensors are 4608 pixels wide, and Hikvision publish identical DORI figures for both: detect 117 m, observe 46 m, recognise 23 m, identify 11 m at 2.8 mm.

What the extra pixels buy is height. The 12 MP is 4608 × 2592, a 16:9 frame. This is 4608 × 3456, a 4:3 frame — the vertical field of view grows from 51.1° to 69.9°. Horizontally the two are the same, at about 94°.

So the question is not "how much detail do I need" but "what shape is the scene". Choose 16 MP for tall coverage from a single position: a stairwell, a multi-storey frontage, a forecourt where you want to see both the vehicle and the entrance above it, or a narrow yard viewed from height. Choose 12 MP for a conventional wide scene, and save on storage.

The cost of that extra height

• Full resolution runs at 12.5 fps (50 Hz) — half the frame rate of the 12 MP model at its own maximum, and well under the 25 fps most installers assume. For 25 fps you drop to 3840 × 2160.
• The aperture is F1.6, where every G2H model in this catalogue is F1.0. Hikvision still quote 0.0008 lux, but this is not the range's low-light performer.
• The infrared reaches 30 m against 117 m of detection range, so after dark the illuminator sets the working distance.

One thing that does not cost more: the bit rate ceiling is 16 Mbps, the same as the 8 MP models and lower than the 12 MP model's 24 Mbps — a consequence of the reduced frame rate. Storage is no worse than a 4K camera.

Why specify black

Against a dark soffit, a black shopfront fascia, exposed steelwork or a slate ceiling, a black turret effectively disappears where a white one draws the eye. Where the camera is meant to be seen as a deterrent, white does that job better.

• An AcuSense-capable Hikvision NVR to carry human/vehicle classification through to smart search
• A microSD card for edge recording or ANR backfill — not supplied
• A matching black bracket if it is not going straight onto a flat soffit
