This is the black version of Hikvision's 4 MP PTRZ dome. Electronically it is identical to the white model, combining two things that usually mean two separate cameras: a lens assembly that can be pan, tilt, rotate and zoom adjusted entirely from software, and an active deterrence package with a white strobe and an audible warning through a built-in speaker. Only the finish differs.

AcuSense deep-learning classification separates people and vehicles from foliage, rain, shadows and animals, so line crossing, intrusion, region entrance and region exiting trigger only on real targets. Face capture is supported.

A big sensor at a modest resolution — deliberately

This camera pairs a 1/1.8" sensor with a 4 MP output. That is the same physical sensor size as the 6 MP and 8 MP models in this range, but spread across fewer pixels — so each photosite is larger and gathers more light. The result is 0.0008 lux colour sensitivity, matching the 8 MP models despite the lower pixel count.

If the scene is dim and you care more about a usable colour image than about counting pixels, this is the sensible choice in the PTRZ family. If you need resolution for detail at distance, the 6 MP DS-2CD2766G2H is the step up.

What PTRZ means here — and its one limit

Unlike a fixed dome, the whole optical block repositions remotely: pan 0° to 350°, tilt 0° to 85°, rotate 0° to 350°, plus the 2.8–12 mm motorised zoom. An installer mounts the camera, then frames the shot from a laptop rather than from the top of a ladder, and the view can be re-aimed months later without another visit.

Be clear about what this is not. It is not a PTZ. Hikvision rate the positioning mechanism at a maximum of 1,000 cycles. It is designed for commissioning and the occasional re-aim, not for an operator to drive around all day. For continuous operator control or patrol tours, specify a true PTZ.

Coverage

Wide: detect 61.5 m, observe 24.4 m, recognise 12.3 m, identify 6.2 m — across a very broad 114.6° field. Tele: detect 151.7 m, observe 60.2 m, recognise 30.3 m, identify 15.1 m. The night limit is the 40 m infrared; beyond that the tele figures depend on ambient or added lighting.

Why specify black

Against a dark soffit, a black shopfront fascia, exposed steelwork or a slate ceiling, a black dome recedes where a white one draws the eye. Worth noting the strobe is unaffected: the housing is black, the flashing light is still white. That is what the /SL designation means, and it is not changed by body colour. If you need a red-and-blue police-style strobe, that is the /SRB model.

Frequently asked questions

Is the black version any different to the white one?

Only the housing finish. Sensor, lens, analytics, strobe, audio and power draw are identical.

Is the strobe black too?

No — the flashing light is white regardless of body colour. That is what /SL denotes.

Can an operator drive this camera around like a PTZ?

No. The positioning mechanism is rated for a maximum of 1,000 cycles and is intended for commissioning and occasional re-aiming.

Why only 4 MP on a 1/1.8" sensor?

Fewer, larger pixels on a big sensor gather more light. It reaches 0.0008 lux in colour, matching the 8 MP models in this range.
