The RG-CS85-48GT4XS-HPD is a Layer 3 enterprise-class switch with 48 Gigabit RJ45 ports that all supply PoE/PoE+ (IEEE 802.3af/at), plus four 1GE/10GE SFP+ ports. Ruijie position it as an aggregation switch for large-sized networks or a core switch for small and medium-sized networks.

Ruijie describe the RG-CS85 series as suited to aggregation on large-sized networks, or to the core of small and medium-sized ones. This model adds PoE/PoE+ (IEEE 802.3af/at) on every one of its 48 Gigabit copper ports, at up to 30 W each, so devices such as access points and IP cameras can be powered from the same Layer 3 switch that connects them.

The PoE budget is set by the power modules you fit, not by the switch alone: 370 W with one RG-PA600I-P-F, 740 W with two RG-PA600I-P-F or one RG-PA1000I-P-F, and 1480 W with two RG-PA1000I-P-F, capped by Ruijie at 1440 W across the 48 ports (30 W x 48). Ruijie note that the number of powered devices depends on the available power and each device's actual draw, so add up the draw of every device before choosing.

Four fixed 1GE/10GE SFP+ ports handle uplinks, and the expansion slot takes the CM85-4XS2CQ module, which adds four more 1GE/10GE SFP+ ports and two 40GE/100GE QSFP28 ports. Switching capacity is 656 Gbps, and the specification lists 64,000 MAC addresses, 24,000 IPv4 unicast routes and up to four VSU members. There are no PoE++ ports, so devices needing more than 30 W are outside what this model supplies.

At least one RG-PA600I-P-F or RG-PA1000I-P-F power module: Ruijie's ordering information asks for one to be purchased, and the two power module slots give 1+1 power redundancy when both are filled. Choose the modules against the total PoE draw of your devices. The four 1GE/10GE SFP+ ports need modules or cables for the links you plan to run, and a 10G SFP+ module needs a 10G SFP+ port. Can the RG-CS85-48GT4XS-HPD power PoE++ devices?

No. All 48 ports are PoE/PoE+ (IEEE 802.3af/at) at up to 30 W each, and 802.3bt (PoE++) supplies more than 30 W, which is beyond what this model provides. A device that needs more than 30 W would need a different power source.

What uplink ports does the RG-CS85-48GT4XS-HPD have?

It has four fixed 1GE/10GE SFP+ ports. The expansion slot takes the CM85-4XS2CQ module, which adds four 1GE/10GE SFP+ ports and two 40GE/100GE QSFP28 ports. A 1G SFP module will not run at 10G, so use 10G SFP+ modules where you want 10G.

Is the RG-CS85-48GT4XS-HPD a Layer 3 switch?

Yes, Ruijie list it as a Layer 3 enterprise-class switch for core or aggregation use. The specification shows 24,000 IPv4 unicast routes, 14,000 IPv6 unicast routes and up to four VSU members.
