Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a PoE switch for CCTV?

Count the cameras, add up their power draw, and check it against the switch's total PoE budget, not just the number of ports. Allow spare ports for growth and check the cable length: standard PoE is rated to 100 metres, and long-range PoE switches extend that for cameras at the far end of a site.

Cat5e or Cat6 for CCTV?

Both will carry an IP camera. Cat6 gives more headroom and is the sensible choice for new installations, especially where the same cabling will also carry Wi-Fi access points or office data. Use external-grade cable outdoors and solid copper rather than copper-clad aluminium, particularly with PoE.
