This is the 4 mm version of Hikvision's 8 MP ColorVu dome: a 1/1.8" sensor at 3840 × 2160 behind an F1.0 lens, with Smart Hybrid Light — white light and infrared — so the camera records in full colour at night. In an aluminium alloy housing rated IP67, IK10 and NEMA 4X.

Along with its 4 MP sibling, this is one of only two ColorVu models that combines colour night recording with a vandal-rated housing. The bullets and turrets in the range record in colour but are conventional housings.

Longest reach of any ColorVu model

At 4 mm the DORI figures are detect 109 m, observe 43 m, recognise 21 m, identify 10 m — the furthest identification distance in the ColorVu family, against 7 m on the 4 MP models. At 2.8 mm the view widens to 108.8° but the figures drop to 89 m detect and 8 m identify.

For a dome the lens choice usually comes down to mounting height. The 4 mm suits a higher mount looking along a forecourt or corridor; the 2.8 mm suits a lower ceiling covering a room corner to corner. Note the standoff: minimum focus is 3.8 m at this lens, so it is not a camera for mounting directly above a doorway at head height.

The trade-off against the 4 MP version

Same sensor, same lens, same housing — but minimum illumination is 0.0005 lux against 0.0001 lux, because the sensor area is split across twice as many pixels. So the 4 MP DS-2CD2147G3 is the better performer in the very darkest conditions; this one is better wherever there is some light and you need detail at distance.

Storage also doubles: a 16 Mbps ceiling against 8 Mbps.

How Hybrid Light works

Three modes: infrared (covert, monochrome), white light (full colour, visibly lit, doubles as a deterrent), and Smart Hybrid — infrared until an event is detected, then white light and colour. That third mode is why most people choose ColorVu: discreet by default, colour when it counts.

The supplement light reaches 30 m against a 109 m detection range at this lens. Beyond 30 m in genuine darkness you are relying on ambient light.
