This is the black version of Hikvision's 4 MP G3 AcuSense mini bullet. Electronically identical to the white model: a motorised 2.8–4 mm lens set remotely from software after mounting, 130 dB WDR, two built-in microphones and 40 m of infrared — in a 515 g housing just 74 mm across, drawing 7.5 watts. Only the finish differs.

A motorised lens in a mini bullet — and on 802.3af

That combination is what makes this camera unusual. Motorised zoom normally means a full-size body and an 802.3at port: the DS-2CD2646G2H varifocal bullet is 333 mm long and needs 18 W. This one does the same job of framing the shot from a laptop, in a body a third the size, on 802.3af Class 3 at 7.5 W.

For a retrofit onto an existing af switch, or the last few ports on a recorder with a tight power budget, that is often the deciding specification.

Read the lens range carefully

The zoom is 2.8 to 4 mm — a short range, not the 2.8–12 mm of the larger varifocals. It exists to let an installer fine-tune the framing remotely rather than swap lenses or return to site, not to zoom in on something distant.

DORI at 2.8 mm: detect 66.6 m, observe 26.4 m, recognise 13.3 m, identify 6.7 m. At 4 mm: detect 79.2 m, observe 31.4 m, recognise 15.8 m, identify 7.9 m. So the practical gain across the whole zoom range is about a metre of identification distance. Choose this for mounting flexibility, not reach — if you need reach, the 2.8–12 mm models are the answer.

Why specify black

Against dark brickwork, exposed steelwork, a black fascia or a slate soffit, a black bullet recedes where a white one draws the eye. On a compact 515 g camera the finish is often what decides whether it reads as part of the building or an addition to it. Where the camera is meant to be seen as a deterrent, white does that better.

130 dB WDR, and an honest note on the aperture

The dynamic range is 130 dB, above the 120 dB of the G2H AcuSense range. But the aperture is F1.6, not the F1.0 of the G2H fixed-lens models, and the sensor is 1/3" rather than 1/1.8". Minimum illumination is 0.001 lux — the same as the G2H turrets, not better. This is a camera for difficult contrast and flexible mounting, not for the darkest scenes.

What it has, and what it doesn't

Two built-in microphones. No speaker, no strobe, and no alarm or audio terminal block — Ethernet, microSD and reset key are the only physical interfaces. For a strobe and siren, the IZ2UY/SL version adds both.

One genuinely useful extra: with a high-end Hikvision card, this model supports memory card encryption and health detection — worth knowing where edge recording holds evidential footage.

Frequently asked questions

Is the black version any different to the white one?

Only the finish. Sensor, lens, analytics, ratings and power draw are identical.

How much does the zoom actually give me?

2.8 to 4 mm, which is about a metre of extra identification distance. It is for remote framing convenience, not reach.

Is it better in the dark than the G2H models?

No. Both reach 0.001 lux, and this has an F1.6 aperture against the G2H's F1.0. It does have wider dynamic range at 130 dB.

Does it have a siren?

No — microphones only. The IZ2UY/SL version adds a strobe and audible warning.
