TP-LINK OMADA - ES228GMP - 28-Port Gigabit Easy Managed Switch with 24-Port PoE+, 384W

ES228GMP — TP-Link Omada 28-Port Gigabit Easy Managed Switch with 24-Port PoE+, 384W

The TP-Link Omada ES228GMP is an easy managed switch with 26 Gigabit RJ45 ports, 24 of them PoE (384 W budget), plus two Gigabit SFP slots plus two Gigabit non-PoE RJ45 ports, in a 1U 19-inch rack-mountable steel case. It can be set up on its own through a web interface or adopted into an Omada SDN controller for central management.

What the ES228GMP is for

The ES228GMP is a PoE switch for powering and connecting IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points and VoIP phones over a single network cable. TP-Link list a PoE budget of 384 W shared across its 24 PoE ports, using 802.3af/at PoE+, with up to 30 W on any one port.

For CCTV, a typical fixed IP camera draws around 7 W or less, so the ES228GMP can power roughly 24 cameras at once (check each camera's datasheet; PTZ and heated cameras draw more). TP-Link's Extend Mode allows PoE and data up to 250 m on the supported ports, at reduced speed, for cameras beyond the normal 100 m limit. For larger runs, see our full range of network switches.

What you will need

You need network cable for each device. Total PoE draw of all connected devices must stay within the 384 W budget. SFP modules for fibre uplinks are sold separately. For central management you need an Omada controller (hardware, software or cloud-based); it is not needed for standalone use.

Buying from Zenith Security Co.

We are a supplier, not an installer. We will go through the ES228GMP with you before you buy — the port count and speed against your devices and the PoE budget against your cameras or access points — and depending on your requirements and your area we can recommend a qualified trade installer. We have been operating since 2012 and you can visit our trade counter in Wolverhampton.

What is the PoE budget of the ES228GMP and how many IP cameras can it power?

TP-Link list a 384 W PoE budget across 24 PoE ports, up to 30 W per port. At around 7 W per typical fixed IP camera that is roughly 24 cameras; higher-draw PTZ or heated cameras reduce that number.

Which PoE standard does the ES228GMP support?

The PoE ports are 802.3af/at compliant, so they power standard PoE (15.4 W) and PoE+ (30 W) devices. They will not power 24 V passive PoE devices.

Is the ES228GMP managed or unmanaged?

It is an easy managed (smart) switch. It works out of the box, and through its web interface you can set VLANs, QoS, IGMP snooping, link aggregation and port mirroring. It sits between an unmanaged switch and TP-Link's fully managed Omada SG range.

Is the ES228GMP Omada compatible and does it need a controller?

Yes, it is part of the TP-Link Omada range. It does not need a controller to work, but adopting it into an Omada hardware, software or cloud-based controller adds central management, the Omada app and cloud access alongside your Omada access points and gateways.

Does the ES228GMP have SFP or uplink ports?

Yes: two Gigabit SFP slots plus two Gigabit non-PoE RJ45 ports.

Can the ES228GMP be rack mounted?

Yes. It has a 1U 19-inch rack-mountable steel case.

What is the difference between the ES228GMP and the ES228GP?

The ES228GMP has 26 Gigabit RJ45 ports, 24 of them PoE (384 W budget), plus two Gigabit SFP slots plus two Gigabit non-PoE RJ45 ports. The ES228GP has 26 Gigabit RJ45 ports, 24 of them PoE (250 W budget), plus two Gigabit SFP slots.
