The DS-2DY5440IXG-E is a long-range positioning camera: 4 MP at 40× optical zoom, with IR to 250 m. This is not a car-park dome — it is built to watch a perimeter, a coastline, a quarry or a large industrial site where the subject may be hundreds of metres away.

It holds 300 presets with patrol and pattern scans, so it can run a set tour of the boundary unattended and be driven manually when something needs a closer look. Pan is 360° endless and tilt runs the full +90° to -90°, which matters on a mast where you may need to look straight down at the base.

Frequently asked questions

How far can it actually see?

Optical zoom is 40× and Hikvision quotes IR to 250 m. Detection, recognition and identification all happen at different distances — tell us what you need to be able to do at what range and we will tell you honestly whether this model does it.

Why does the mounting matter so much?

At high zoom a small movement at the camera becomes a large movement in the picture. A pole that flexes in the wind will make the image unusable at full zoom, however good the camera is.

Will standard PoE run it?

No. It needs 802.3bt (type 3, class 6) at up to 60 W, or a 36 V DC or 24 V AC supply at the same rating. An 802.3af or 802.3at switch will not run it, and an undersized supply is the usual reason a PTZ resets when it moves.

Can it track automatically?

Yes. Hikvision lists manual tracking and auto-tracking for this model, so it will lock on to a moving person or vehicle and follow it across the scene.

What is a positioning camera, as opposed to a speed dome?

It is the same idea — pan, tilt and zoom under your control — but in a larger open housing built for reach and for weather rather than for looking discreet on a building. It tilts further, carries a bigger lens and a much stronger illuminator, and it is meant for masts and perimeters.
