Hikvision PTZ Cameras: Speed Domes, Zoom, PanoVu and Turbo HD Explained

Zenith Security Co. · Authorised Hikvision partner · Operating since 2012 · Trade counter and live showroom, Wolverhampton

In short: a PTZ camera pans, tilts and zooms, so one unit covers ground that would otherwise take several fixed cameras. The trade-off is that it looks in one direction at a time. Hikvision's range runs from 2-inch mini domes with 4× zoom up to 8-inch DarkFighterX domes with 25× zoom, in IP and Turbo HD versions, plus PanoVu units that watch everything and zoom at the same time. This page sets out what we stock and how to pick. Browse them all in PTZ IP cameras.

How to read a Hikvision PTZ model number

The numbers are not random, and once you know the pattern you can size a camera from the code alone. Take DS-2DE4425IW-DE:

  • DS-2DE — an IP speed dome. DS-2AE is the Turbo HD (coax) equivalent, DS-2DF is DarkFighterX, DS-2PT and DS-2DP are PanoVu.
  • 4 — the dome size in inches. Bigger domes house bigger lenses and longer IR.
  • 42 — the resolution, so 4 MP.
  • 25 — the optical zoom, so 25×.
  • I in the suffix means built-in IR; G marks the AcuSense models. The tail (-DE, -DE3, -AE) is the power and mount variant — ask us if you are matching an existing install.

More of the naming system is in Hikvision model numbers explained.

Mini PTZ domes: 2-inch and 3-inch

Small, indoor-or-sheltered units with 4× zoom. These are for panning around a shop floor, a reception or a small yard rather than identifying a face at distance.

4-inch PTZ domes: the workhorse

This is the size most sites end up with. 15× or 25× zoom, IR on the I models, and small enough to sit on a wall bracket without looking industrial.

5-inch and 7-inch: longer range

Bigger domes, longer IR and, on the 32× models, the reach for a long boundary. These are the ones for a yard, a compound or a school site where the camera is a long way from what it is watching.

Turbo HD PTZ: for existing coax

If there is already coax in the ground, a Turbo HD PTZ saves rewiring the site. It runs to a DVR rather than an NVR.

HiLook PTZ: the budget option

HiLook is Hikvision's value brand, and it caters for end users as well as trade. The PTZ range covers the same jobs at a lower price, with a shorter feature list: PTZ-N4215I-DE (2 MP, 15×, 100 m IR), PTZ-N4225I-DE (2 MP, 25×, 100 m IR), PTZ-N4215-DE3 (2 MP, 15×), PTZ-N2404I-DE3 (4 MP, 4×, 20 m IR) and, on coax, PTZ-T4215I-D and PTZ-T4215-D3. There is also the PTZ-N2C400I-W, a 4 MP Wi-Fi pan-tilt camera with auto-tracking for domestic use. See the full HiLook range.

Choosing a PTZ

  • Start with the distance, not the megapixels. Optical zoom is what lets you identify someone far away. 4× for a forecourt, 15–25× for a car park or yard, 32× for a long boundary.
  • A PTZ looks one way at a time. If the site needs continuous cover, pair it with fixed cameras, or use a PanoVu so the wide view keeps recording while the zoom is busy.
  • Check the IR range against the zoom range. There is no point zooming 32× into ground the IR does not reach. If the area is lit, a non-IR model costs less.
  • Match the recorder. IP PTZ to an NVR, Turbo HD PTZ to a DVR, with a spare channel and enough PoE budget. Our guide to which Hikvision NVR do I need covers the recorder side.
  • Budget for the bracket. A PTZ carries a moving load, so it needs the right wall, pole, pendant or corner mount: see CCTV accessories.

Frequently asked questions

What does PTZ stand for?

Pan, tilt, zoom. The camera turns left and right, up and down, and the lens zooms optically. One PTZ covers ground that would otherwise need several fixed cameras — but it only looks in one direction at a time.

How do I read a Hikvision PTZ model number?

In DS-2DE4425IW-DE: DS-2DE is an IP speed dome, 4 is the dome size in inches, 42 is 4 MP, and 25 is 25× optical zoom. An I means IR and G marks the AcuSense models. DS-2AE is the Turbo HD equivalent.

How much optical zoom do I need?

4× for a small yard or forecourt, 15–25× for a car park, school field or builder's yard, 32× for a long boundary or a quarry. Digital zoom is not a substitute — it only enlarges pixels.

What is the difference between IP PTZ and Turbo HD PTZ?

IP (DS-2DE) runs over network cable to an NVR. Turbo HD (DS-2AE) runs over coax to a DVR, which suits replacing an analogue camera on existing cable. For anything new, IP is the sensible choice.

Does a Hikvision PTZ follow people automatically?

Some models do. Auto-tracking is a per-model feature, not standard across the range, so tell us it matters and we will confirm the model supports it before you order.

Will a PTZ work with my existing recorder?

Usually, if the type matches — IP to NVR, Turbo HD to DVR — and there is a spare channel with enough bandwidth or PoE budget. Some older recorders cannot drive the PTZ controls. Tell us your recorder model and we will check.

What is a PanoVu camera?

A panoramic view and a PTZ in one unit. The wide channel watches the whole scene while the PTZ zooms in on detail, so nothing is missed while the lens is pointed elsewhere.

Do PTZ cameras need a special bracket?

Yes. A PTZ is heavier than a fixed camera and the bracket carries a moving load, so use the Hikvision mount made for that dome size. Some models include one, most do not.

Is your Hikvision stock genuine, and how fast is delivery?

Yes. We are an authorised Hikvision partner, operating since 2012. Orders are delivered within 1–3 working days to addresses in England, Scotland and Wales, with warranty and support direct from us.
