The DS-2DY7236IX-A(T5) is a long-range positioning camera: 2 MP at 36× optical zoom, with IR to 150 m. This is not a car-park dome — it is built to watch a perimeter, a coastline, a quarry or a large industrial site where the subject may be hundreds of metres away.

It holds 300 presets with patrol and pattern scans, so it can run a set tour of the boundary unattended and be driven manually when something needs a closer look. It is a large 7-inch unit and it runs from 24 V AC — Hikvision does not list PoE for this model, so plan a local power feed at the mast.

Frequently asked questions

How far can it actually see?

Optical zoom is 36× and Hikvision quotes IR to 150 m. Detection, recognition and identification all happen at different distances — tell us what you need to be able to do at what range and we will tell you honestly whether this model does it.

Can I run it on PoE?

No. Hikvision lists 24 V AC at up to 55 W and does not specify PoE for this model, so it needs a local power supply at the camera position. Budget for that before you order.

Why does the mounting matter so much?

At high zoom a small movement at the camera becomes a large movement in the picture. A mast that flexes in the wind will make the image unusable at full zoom, however good the camera is.

Why 2 MP rather than 4 MP?

Larger pixels on a 1/1.8" sensor gather more light, which is what you want on a long lens at night. If you would rather have the resolution and can accept slightly less low-light performance, the 4 MP DS-2DY5440IXG-E is the alternative.

What is a positioning camera, as opposed to a speed dome?

Same idea — pan, tilt and zoom under your control — but in a larger open housing built for reach and weather rather than for looking discreet on a building. It carries a bigger lens and a stronger illuminator, and it is meant for masts and perimeters.
