The TP-Link TD-W9970 is a 300 Mbps Wi-Fi VDSL/ADSL modem router with a built-in modem for VDSL2 (with G.vector, up to 100 Mbps) and ADSL2+ (up to 24 Mbps). It has 2.4 GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi with two 4 dBi antennas, three 10/100 Mbps LAN ports plus one LAN/WAN port, and a USB 2.0 port for a 3G/4G backup dongle.

What the TD-W9970 is for

It connects directly to a phone-line broadband service, so it can replace an ISP router on copper ADSL or FTTC/VDSL lines. The LAN/WAN port also lets it run behind a cable or fibre modem as a normal wireless router.

Does the TD-W9970 work on UK fibre (FTTC) broadband?

It has a VDSL2 modem with G.vector, which is the technology used on FTTC lines, plus ADSL2+ for copper-only lines. Check with your provider whether they allow third-party routers.

How fast is the TD-W9970?

VDSL2 up to 100 Mbps, ADSL2+ up to 24 Mbps, and 300 Mbps 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The Ethernet ports are 10/100 Mbps.

How many devices can I connect?

Four wired devices on the Ethernet ports plus your Wi-Fi devices. TP-Link do not publish a client limit; for a busy home, add a mesh system or extender for coverage.

Can it use 4G as a backup?

Yes. Plug a compatible 3G/4G USB adapter into the USB 2.0 port to run it as a 3G/4G router.

Is it dual band?

No, Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz only.
