TP-Link Deco Mesh Wi-Fi: Which Deco Should You Buy?

Dead spots upstairs? Wi-Fi that drops in the garden room? A TP-Link Deco mesh system replaces one weak router signal with several units that work as one network, so you get strong Wi-Fi in every room under a single network name.

This guide compares the Deco systems we stock, so you can choose the right one for your home or small office. Zenith Security Co is an official TP-Link VAR Partner with UK stock.

How Deco mesh works

One Deco unit plugs into your broadband router or ONT. The others sit around the home and link to it wirelessly (or through your mains wiring, with the PX50), passing the connection along. Your phone or laptop moves between them automatically as you walk around, with no need to reconnect to a different network. Everything is set up and managed in the free Deco app.

Deco X50 vs Deco M4

The Deco M4 is the budget choice. It uses older Wi-Fi 5 and suits lighter use and slower broadband. The Deco X50 uses Wi-Fi 6, which handles many devices at once far better. If you have fibre broadband, several people streaming, or smart home devices, the X50 is the one to buy.

Deco X50 vs Deco BE25 (Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 7)

Wi-Fi 7 (Deco BE25) brings faster speeds and lower latency with newer phones and laptops that support it. Older devices still connect, at their own speed. Choose the BE25 if you're buying for the next five years or more. Otherwise the X50 is excellent value.

When to choose the Deco PX50 (powerline)

Stone walls, steel-framed extensions and long houses can block wireless links between mesh units. The Deco PX50 also passes the connection through your home's mains wiring, so units in hard-to-reach rooms still get a strong link.

Mesh, extender or powerline?

  • Mesh (Deco): the best experience. One network everywhere, with seamless roaming.
  • Wi-Fi extender: the cheapest fix for one weak room. See our Wi-Fi extender and powerline guide.
  • Powerline: gets a wired connection to a room through your mains sockets.

Deco FAQs

Do I need to replace my broadband router?

No. The main Deco plugs into your existing router and works alongside it. Many people put the router into "modem mode" or "access point mode" afterwards, but it isn't required.

How many Deco units do I need?

A 3-pack suits most UK homes, from a 3–4 bedroom house to a small office. Add units for larger homes, and an outdoor Deco for the garden.

Can I mix different Deco models?

Yes. Deco units of different models can usually join the same Deco network through the Deco app. Check TP-Link's compatibility list for the specific models.

Is Deco good for gaming and working from home?

Yes. Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 models such as the X50 and BE25 handle video calls, streaming and gaming on many devices at once, and you can connect a games console or PC to the Ethernet ports on any unit.
