The Dahua HAC-HFW2241E-A (Dahua's datasheet calls it DH-HAC-HFW2241E-A) is a 2MP 1080p Starlight HDCVI IR bullet CCTV security camera with a 3.6mm fixed lens, an audio input and a built-in microphone, from Dahua's Pro Series. Dahua also lists 2.8mm and 6mm versions of this model; this page is the 3.6mm camera. It is an HD analogue camera: it sends high-definition video over coaxial cable, so the existing coax of an analogue CCTV system can be reused. Infrared night vision reaches 40m, and the IP67 housing suits indoor or outdoor use.

What you will need

• A Dahua XVR recorder or another HDCVI-capable recorder. Penta-brid XVRs accept HDCVI, AHD, TVI, analogue and IP on the same box, so you can mix old and new cameras and upgrade in stages (see Dahua Penta-brid recorders explained).
• RG59 coax and 12V power to each camera. Pre-made shotgun cable carries both in one run.
• A multi-way 12V power supply for several cameras; the recorder does not power them.
• A surveillance-grade hard drive, sized for how long you need to keep footage.
• Signage. If your cameras capture anything beyond your boundary you are a data controller under UK GDPR and must display a notice.

What does HDCVI mean?

HDCVI is Dahua's technology for sending high-definition video over coaxial cable, with two-way data between camera and recorder and audio on models that have it. Dahua's datasheet quotes up to 800m for 1080P video over coaxial cable and up to 300m over UTP cable, verified in its test laboratory. See Dahua HDCVI cameras explained.

What does Starlight mean on this camera?

Dahua lists this camera as Starlight: a large, high-performance sensor that captures more detail and accurate colour at night or in limited light. Its minimum illumination is 0.004 lux at F1.6, and 0 lux with the infrared on. See Dahua Starlight low-light cameras.

Does it have a microphone?

Yes. Dahua lists one audio input and a built-in microphone. Whether sound is recorded depends on the recorder, so tell us your recorder model and we will confirm.

How far can the infrared night vision see?

Dahua lists infrared up to 40m (130 ft) with Smart IR. With the 3.6mm lens its DORI figures above give 55m to detect a person and 6m to identify one.

Are there other lens versions?

Dahua lists 2.8mm and 6mm versions of this model as well. The figures on this page are for the 3.6mm camera.

Is there an eyeball version with a zoom lens?

The HAC-HDW2241T-Z-A is a 2MP Starlight HDCVI eyeball with a 2.7-13.5mm motorised zoom and a built-in mic.

Will this work with my existing recorder?

Only if it supports HDCVI. Most Dahua XVRs auto-detect the camera type per channel. Tell us your recorder model and we will confirm.

Do I need to run new cable?

Usually not. Dahua says an HDCVI system can upgrade an analogue system without replacing the existing coaxial cabling, so if the existing coax is sound it will carry the HD signal.
