In short: Penta-brid is Dahua's name for a recorder that accepts five camera signal types — HDCVI, HD-TVI, AHD, analogue (CVBS) and IP — on the same channel. It is what lets an existing analogue CCTV system be upgraded camera by camera, mixing old and new equipment on one recorder rather than replacing everything at once. Most CCTV recorders are built for one camera signal type. A Dahua Penta-brid XVR or HCVR recorder auto-detects and accepts five on the same channel: HDCVI, HD-TVI, AHD, plain analogue (CVBS), and IP cameras over the network. In practice this means a site with older analogue cameras can add new HDCVI or IP cameras onto the same recorder without swapping out everything that already works.
Choosing channels & resolution
Channels. One per camera, with room to expand — buy the larger option if there is any realistic chance of adding cameras.
Maximum resolution. Check the recorder supports the resolution of the cameras being fitted, or footage records at less than the camera captures.
PoE ports. Some models have built-in PoE for IP cameras, powering them over the network cable; coax cameras (HDCVI/TVI/AHD/analogue) still need their own 12V supply.
Drive bays. More bays and larger supported drives mean longer retention before old footage is overwritten.
