An AI camera doesn't just see movement. It recognises people, vehicles, faces and number plates and alerts you only when something you care about happens. Watch the demo, then find which Hikvision or Dahua model does what.
Old-style motion detection compares one frame to the next and fires whenever enough pixels change: rain, headlights, a cat, a branch in the wind. AI cameras run a trained neural network on a chip inside the camera or recorder. It looks at the shapes in the picture, decides what each one is, and only then checks your rule: "a person crossed this line". The result is far fewer false alerts and recordings you can search by what was in them.
| Traditional CCTV | AI CCTV | |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers an alert | Any change in pixels: rain, insects, shadows, headlights, pets | Only the targets you choose: people, vehicles, faces, plates |
| False alarms | Many, so alerts often get switched off | Far fewer; Hikvision reports up to 90% fewer on its newest perimeter cameras |
| Finding footage | Scroll the timeline by hand | Filter by person or vehicle, or type a description (AcuSeek) |
| Deterrence | Passive recording | Light and siren triggered by people on selected models |
| Business insight | None | Footfall counts, plate logs, heat maps on advanced models |
| Storage | Every pixel recorded equally | AI codecs keep detail on people and vehicles and save space elsewhere |
| Monthly fee | None | None: Hikvision and Dahua AI runs on the camera or recorder |
The sensor records a frame. Low-light tech such as DarkFighter, ColorVu or Smart Dual Light keeps it clear at night, which matters because AI can only recognise what it can see.
A neural network, trained on huge numbers of labelled images, draws a box round each object and labels it: person, car, van, face, plate.
You draw a line or zone and pick the target. "Vehicle enters yard after 6pm" alerts; a fox in the same zone doesn't.
Push alert to the app, strobe and siren on deterrence models, and an event tagged with what it saw, so later you can search "people, Tuesday, side gate".
Camera AI or recorder AI? An AI camera does the work itself, for every channel. An AI recorder can add human and vehicle filtering to a limited number of ordinary cameras, which is a lower-cost way to upgrade an existing system.

The same kind of technology behind AI chatbots is now in CCTV. Hikvision launched its Guanlan large-scale AI models in 2025: foundation models pre-trained on huge datasets, then trained further with industry know-how. They read the whole scene rather than one object in isolation, so they detect more and misjudge less. Four ways it shows up in products:
DeepinViewX cameras run the model at the edge. Hikvision reports 90% fewer false alarms, detection at twice the range of traditional cameras, and half as many repeat alarms on the same target.
Guanlan Encoding uses AI to find the parts of each frame that matter, keeps detail on people and vehicles and compresses still backgrounds harder. Average saving: 30–50% storage, still within the H.265 standard.
AcuSeek turns a phrase into a search, typed or spoken in 30+ languages: "wheeled luggage", "a white dog", "an e-bike rider without a helmet". It works on the recorder, in Hik-Connect and in HikCentral.
OpenAlert flips search into monitoring: describe a target, such as "a person pushing a cart", and the system alerts you the next time one appears.
Hikvision's worked example: a 2,000-camera project recording 1080p at 2 Mbps for 90 days needs 202 hard drives instead of 403, with close to half the rack space saved.

Once a camera understands what it sees, it can answer operational questions as well as security ones. Hikvision says its scenario-specific AI typically cuts false alarms by 70–90%. Examples it highlights:
AI counting replaces clickers, turnstiles and infrared beams, leaves out staff and reports visitors by shop, floor and hour. Newer systems also remind staff when shelves run low, flag items being concealed, and alert when trolleys leave the return area.
Fall detection spots a person falling and alerts staff with the clip, so they can respond quickly and review what happened later. Ask us about current models.
Hard hat detection flags anyone on site without one, alerts the manager and logs the time, place and picture. It can also link to site access control. Ask us about current models.
AI is where security camera technology is heading. Industry analysts expect video analytics spending to roughly triple between 2025 and 2030, and estimates vary with how each firm defines the market.

For most outdoor cameras, yes. The extra cost of everyday AI (AcuSense or WizSense) over a basic camera is usually small, and it's the difference between alerts you trust and alerts you mute. Advanced AI earns its place only when you need a specific answer from the footage.

About 2.5–3 m high with a slight downward angle. People should fill a reasonable part of the frame; a figure a few pixels tall can't be classified.
Cover your drive, gate or yard, not the public pavement. Use line crossing or intrusion with human/vehicle ticked; plain motion detection still fires on everything.
Faces and number plates are personal data under UK GDPR. For face recognition or ANPR, do a data protection impact assessment and follow the ICO's CCTV guidance.
We've supplied CCTV to trade and retail customers since 2012 and we're an authorised Hikvision partner. Tell us what you need to protect and we'll match the camera, recorder and storage, explain the AI settings before you buy, and support you afterwards.
Orders are dispatched for delivery within 1–2 working days to England, Scotland and Wales, or collect from our Wolverhampton trade counter, where you can see AI cameras running live. An AI CCTV camera has a processor that runs a trained neural network on the live picture. Instead of reacting to any change in pixels, it recognises what is in the scene, such as a person, a vehicle, a face or a number plate, and only raises an alert when your rule is met.
A normal CCTV camera alerts on any change in the picture, so rain, insects, shadows and headlights all trigger it. An AI camera recognises what moved and only alerts on the targets you choose, such as people or vehicles. It also lets you search recordings by person or vehicle instead of scrolling through them.
For most outdoor cameras, yes. Everyday AI such as Hikvision AcuSense or Dahua WizSense usually costs little more than a basic camera and cuts false alerts so that notifications stay useful. Advanced AI such as face capture, ANPR or people counting is worth it when you need that specific information.
Yes. AI cameras use infrared, low-light sensors such as DarkFighter, or colour night vision such as ColorVu and Smart Dual Light. The AI works on whatever the camera can see, so good night imaging improves detection accuracy after dark.
No. On Hikvision AcuSense and DeepinView and on Dahua WizSense and WizMind the AI runs on the camera or recorder itself. Alerts reach your phone through the free Hik-Connect or DMSS apps. There is no monthly fee for the detection.
AcuSense is Hikvision's everyday AI: it tells people and vehicles from everything else so you get fewer false alarms and faster searches. DeepinView is Hikvision's specialist AI range, with more processing power for face capture, number plate recognition, multi-target attributes and dedicated perimeter protection.
WizSense is Dahua's mid-range AI tier: smart motion detection, perimeter protection with human and vehicle filtering, and AI search. WizMind is Dahua's top tier, adding deeper analysis such as face recognition, people counting, ANPR and richer metadata.
Often, yes. An AI recorder such as a Hikvision AcuSense NVR or DVR, or a Dahua WizSense XVR or AI NVR, can apply human and vehicle detection to a limited number of ordinary cameras. Check the AI channel count in the recorder's specification.
AcuSeek is Hikvision's natural-language video search, built on its Guanlan large multimodal AI model. You type or say what you are looking for, such as a white van at the gate, and the recorder returns matching clips in seconds. It runs on AcuSeek NVRs and can be used through Hik-Connect and HikCentral.
Recording faces and number plates is processing personal data under UK GDPR. Before using face recognition or ANPR, carry out a data protection impact assessment and follow the ICO's guidance on video surveillance. We supply the equipment; we do not give legal advice.
