School Wi-Fi & Networking with TP-Link Omada

Reliable Wi-Fi in every classroom, staffroom and playground, managed from one dashboard.

Schools, colleges and multi-academy trusts need a network that stays up during lessons, keeps pupils, staff and guests separate, and can be run by a small IT team. TP-Link Omada brings switches, Wi-Fi and routers together under one controller, so you can manage every building, or every school in a trust, from a single screen. Zenith Security Co is an official TP-Link VAR Partner.

Watch: Why the University of Cambridge chose TP-Link Omada

Selwyn and Robinson Colleges deployed over 100 Omada switches, each set up in minutes, managed centrally from the cloud.

Building a school network that meets DfE guidance

The Department for Education's digital and technology standards set out what a school network should do. TP-Link's education guide maps the Omada range against them:

  • Core switches: the guidance suggests core switches that stack at 40Gb or more, with resilience such as dual power supplies. Omada's Layer 3 core switches offer 10Gb links, full L3 routing and resilient stacking.
  • Edge switches: 1Gb ports or faster to classrooms, ideally with 2× 10Gb fibre uplinks back to the core. Omada edge switches cover 8 to 52 ports, many with PoE+ to power access points and cameras.
  • Wi-Fi: Omada access points for every space: ceiling models for classrooms, wall-plate models for small rooms, and outdoor models for playgrounds and sports areas.
  • Routing and security: an Omada gateway handles routing, VPN, content filtering and IDS/IPS without affecting managed services you already use.

Always check your design against the current DfE standards and your own IT policy.

Why schools choose Omada

  • Separate networks for pupils, staff and guests, so traffic is segmented and secure.
  • One dashboard for the whole trust: on-premises, cloud-hosted or hybrid management with permission-based access.
  • Lifetime warranty on TP-Link business-class products, and UK-based support.
  • Value for money: enterprise features at a price that suits school budgets. TP-Link also runs public sector offers, so ask us for current pricing.
  • Link outbuildings without digging: wireless bridges such as the EAP215-Bridge KIT connect sports halls and portable classrooms.

School Wi-Fi FAQs

Is TP-Link Omada suitable for schools?

Yes. Omada is used in schools, colleges and universities, including Selwyn and Robinson Colleges at the University of Cambridge. It offers centralised management, guest and pupil network separation, and Layer 3 core switching.

Can we manage several schools in a trust from one place?

Yes. The Omada controller supports multiple sites with permission-based access, so a trust's IT team can manage every school from one dashboard.

Does Omada meet DfE network standards?

TP-Link's education guide maps Omada core switches, edge switches and Wi-Fi to the DfE guidance. Check your final design against the current standards.

Can CCTV run on the same network?

Yes. Omada PoE switches power IP cameras as well as access points. Use VLANs to keep CCTV traffic separate.
