TP-Link Gigabit Switch Guide: Which Network Switch Do You Need?

Run out of ports on your router? A gigabit switch adds more wired connections for PCs, TVs, consoles, NVRs and printers, all at full gigabit speed. This guide helps you pick the right TP-Link switch.

Zenith Security Co is an official TP-Link VAR Partner with UK stock.

Which TP-Link switch do I need?

Unmanaged, Easy Managed or Smart Managed?

  • Unmanaged (TL-SG and LS models above): plug in and it works. Ideal for homes and simple offices.
  • Easy Managed (Omada ES range): adds VLANs, port monitoring and free cloud management through the Omada app. See our managed vs unmanaged switch guide.
  • Smart Managed (Omada SG range): full Layer 2+ features for business networks. See Omada switches.

Do you need PoE?

If you are connecting IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points or VoIP phones, a PoE switch powers them through the network cable, so no separate power supplies are needed. Popular TP-Link PoE models include the TL-SG1005P, LS108GP and TL-SG1210P. Browse all TP-Link PoE switches.

TL-SG vs LiteWave (LS)

Both are reliable unmanaged gigabit switches from TP-Link. The TL-SG105 and TL-SG108 have a steel case, and the LiteWave LS range is TP-Link's value line. Choose on case, size and budget. Speeds are gigabit on every port of both.

Gigabit switch FAQs

Will a switch slow down my internet?

No. A gigabit switch runs each port at up to 1,000 Mbps, faster than most UK broadband connections, so it won't limit your internet speed.

Do I need a managed switch at home?

Usually not. An unmanaged switch such as the TL-SG105 or TL-SG108 is ideal. Choose managed if you want separate networks (VLANs), for example to keep CCTV apart from home devices.

How do I connect a switch?

Run one network cable from your router to any port on the switch, then plug your devices into the other ports. No setup is needed on an unmanaged switch.

What's the difference between 10/100 and gigabit?

10/100 switches (TL-SF models) top out at 100 Mbps per port. Gigabit switches (TL-SG and LS...G models) reach 1,000 Mbps, so choose gigabit for fast broadband, file transfers and 4K streaming.
