Managed vs Unmanaged Switch: Why Omada Easy Managed Is the Middle Ground

Unmanaged switches are cheap but blind. Fully managed switches are powerful but complicated. TP-Link Omada Easy Managed switches sit in between: managed features you'll actually use, at close to unmanaged prices.

This guide explains the difference between managed and unmanaged switches, when each makes sense, and which Omada Easy Managed model suits a CCTV system, an office or a shop. Zenith Security Co is an official TP-Link VAR Partner with UK stock.

What is a managed switch?

A managed switch lets you see and control what happens on each port. You can split the network into VLANs (for example keeping cameras away from guest Wi-Fi), watch traffic, and power-cycle a PoE device without going to site. An unmanaged switch simply passes traffic, with no visibility and no control.

Omada Easy Managed switches give you the managed features that matter most to installers and small businesses, without the complex menus of a full enterprise switch:

  • Lifetime free cloud management through the Omada app and Omada Cloud.
  • One-scan setup: scan the barcode to add the switch to your site.
  • Multi-site management from one account, which suits installers looking after many customers.
  • Real-time monitoring and traffic insights for each port and device.
  • VLANs to separate CCTV, phones, staff and guest traffic for better security.

Which Omada Easy Managed switch do I need?

8-port PoE switches (the most popular size)

  • ES208GP: 8 gigabit ports, all PoE+. A tidy choice for an 8-camera CCTV system.
  • ES210GP: 8 PoE+ ports plus uplinks, 63W budget.
  • ES210GMP: 8 PoE+ ports plus uplinks, 123W budget for heated or PTZ cameras.

Small PoE switches (4 devices)

  • ES205GP: 5 ports with 4 PoE+, ideal for a small CCTV kit or a couple of access points.
  • ES206GP: 6 ports with 4 PoE+.

Larger PoE switches (16–24 devices)

2.5G multi-gig (for Wi-Fi 7)

Non-PoE and industrial

Choosing a PoE switch for CCTV

  1. Count your cameras and add one port for the NVR uplink, plus spares.
  2. Add up the wattage. Check each camera's datasheet. Heated, PTZ and IR-heavy cameras draw more.
  3. Pick a total PoE budget with headroom, for example the 123W ES210GMP rather than the 63W ES210GP for eight power-hungry cameras.
  4. Use a VLAN to keep camera traffic separate from office or guest devices.

FAQs

What is the difference between a managed and unmanaged switch?

An unmanaged switch just connects devices, with no settings or visibility. A managed switch lets you create VLANs, monitor each port and control PoE remotely. Omada Easy Managed switches give you those core managed features with simple app-based setup.

Do Omada Easy Managed switches need a controller?

No. They can be managed through the free Omada app and Omada Cloud. They also work with an Omada controller or Fusion gateway if you have one.

Is cloud management really free?

TP-Link describes cloud management for Omada Easy Managed switches as lifetime free.

Which 8-port PoE switch is best for CCTV?

For eight standard cameras, the ES208GP or ES210GP suits most systems. For heated or PTZ cameras, choose the ES210GMP with its 123W budget.

Can I restart a camera remotely?

Yes. On an Easy Managed PoE switch you can power-cycle a port from the Omada app, which restarts the camera without a site visit.
