The RG-RAP72Pro-OD is Ruijie Reyee's BE5040-class dual-band Wi-Fi 7 access point for indoor or outdoor mounting. It is a 90 x 46 x 239 mm unit weighing up to 0.7 kg, rated IP65, that fixes to a wall or pole and takes both data and power over a single 2.5G Ethernet port.

What the RG-RAP72Pro-OD is for

Ruijie describe the RG-RAP72Pro-OD as a versatile outdoor/indoor mesh access point for wall or pole mounting. It is dual-radio with five spatial streams -2x2 MU-MIMO on 2.4 GHz and 3x3 MU-MIMO on 5 GHz - rated at up to 4323 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It is a dual-band Wi-Fi 7 design: there is no 6 GHz radio. Ruijie list a maximum of 511 associated wireless clients with both bands enabled (64 on 2.4 GHz, 511 on 5 GHz).

Ruijie highlight two Wi-Fi 7 features. MLO uses more than one frequency band so that a client connects on the better one; Ruijie quote average latency 55.19% lower and an average loss rate 35.71% lower with MLO on, compared with a single 5 GHz band under the same interference. Preamble puncturing blocks the channels affected by interference and bonds the clear ones, which Ruijie say improves channel utilisation by up to 7 times. Client devices need to support Wi-Fi 7 themselves to benefit from either.

The single 10/100/1000/2500BASE-T port means the wired uplink can run at 2.5 Gbps when it is connected to a multi-gigabit switch port; on an ordinary Gigabit port the uplink runs at 1 Gbps. The IP65 rating and –30°C to +65°C operating range cover outdoor mounting, and Ruijie position the same unit for indoor use as well.

What you will need

PoE is the only way to power the RG-RAP72Pro-OD: Ruijie list PoE/PoE+ and no local DC input. Maximum consumption is 21 W, which is above the 15.4 W an 802.3af port supplies, so plan on a PoE+ (802.3at) PoE switch port or PoE injector. To get 2.5 Gbps on the wire, that switch port or injector must itself be 2.5G-capable; a Gigabit one will run the uplink at 1 Gbps. Ruijie's page does not list the box contents, so ask us what fixings are supplied, and allow for outdoor-rated network cable if it is going outside.

Can the RG-RAP72Pro-OD be powered from a DC adapter?

No. Ruijie's specification lists PoE/PoE+ as the power supply and no local DC input, so it must be powered over the Ethernet cable from a PoE switch or injector.

Does the RG-RAP72Pro-OD need PoE+?

Ruijie list PoE/PoE+ as accepted, but the maximum power consumption is 21 W, which is more than the 15.4 W an 802.3af port supplies. Plan on a PoE+ (802.3at) port or injector; tell us the switch model and we will check.

Yes. It is rated IP65, has an operating temperature range of –30°C to +65°C and mounts on a wall or pole. Ruijie describe it as an indoor/outdoor access point.

Do I need a 2.5G switch for the RG-RAP72Pro-OD?

Not to make it work: the port is 10/100/1000/2500BASE-T, so it will link to a Gigabit port. A 2.5G-capable PoE+ port is needed only if you want the wired uplink to run faster than 1 Gbps.
