TP-Link Archer Wi-Fi Router Buying Guide

TP-Link Archer routers replace or sit alongside an ISP router to give faster, more reliable Wi-Fi. For most UK homes on fibre broadband, a Wi-Fi 6 router such as the Archer AX55 is enough; choose Wi-Fi 7 (Archer BE230, BE550 or BE700) for multi-gig broadband or many devices, and a modem router (VX or TD-W models) if your line is VDSL. Zenith Security Co is listed on TP-Link UK's where-to-buy page as a VAR Partner and Online Store, and every router below is on our site.

Modem routers and VoIP routers

A modem router has the DSL or fibre (PON) connection built in, so it can replace the ISP's router on a compatible line. VoIP models add a phone port for a digital phone service.

How to choose an Archer router

1. Check your broadband type

On full-fibre or cable broadband, the line arrives on Ethernet, so a standard Archer router works. On a VDSL (fibre to the cabinet) line, you need a modem router with VDSL built in, such as the VX230v or Archer VX1800v, or you can keep the ISP router and add an Archer behind it. Check with your provider which settings their line needs.

2. Match the Wi-Fi to your devices and speed

Wi-Fi 6 suits most homes and small offices on broadband up to around 1 Gbps. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band for less crowded airwaves. Wi-Fi 7 routers such as the Archer BE550 and BE700 add 2.5G or 10G ports for multi-gig broadband. Older phones and laptops only use the newer features if they support them.

3. Count the wired devices

Desktop PCs, consoles and TVs are often better on cable. Most models have 3 or 4 LAN ports; add a switch if you need more.

4. Think about coverage

One router will not reach every room in a larger or thick-walled home. Several Archer models list EasyMesh or OneMesh support, so you can add a compatible extender, or choose a Deco mesh system instead.

5. Need a phone line?

If your phone service moves to digital voice, a VoIP router with a phone port (models ending "v") can connect a standard handset. Check that your provider supports the router before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Which TP-Link Archer router should I buy?

For most homes on fibre broadband, a Wi-Fi 6 router such as the Archer AX55 or AX58 is a good fit. For multi-gig broadband or many devices, the Wi-Fi 7 Archer BE230, BE550 or BE700 have 2.5G or faster ports.

Can I use a TP-Link router instead of my ISP router?

On full-fibre and cable lines, usually yes, by connecting the Archer to the ONT or modem by Ethernet. On VDSL lines you need a modem router such as the VX230v or Archer VX1800v. Some providers need specific login details, so check with them first.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi 6, 6E and 7?

Wi-Fi 6 uses 2.4 and 5 GHz. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 7 is newer, adds Multi-Link Operation and, on tri-band models, wider 320 MHz channels on 6 GHz.

Do Archer routers support mesh?

Several Archer models list EasyMesh or OneMesh on their product pages. For whole-home mesh from the start, a Deco system is usually simpler.

Which TP-Link router has a phone port?

The VX230v, Archer VX1800v, EX520v, EB200v Pro, EB431v, EB831v and XX532v are VoIP routers with phone ports.
