The Ruijie Reyee RG-RAP72 brings Wi-Fi 7 features such as Multi-Link Operation and 4K QAM to a round ceiling access point 195 mm across. Its one Ethernet port runs at up to 2.5 Gbps, so the link back to the switch can carry more than a Gigabit port allows.

What the RG-RAP72 is for

Ruijie pitch the RG-RAP72 at smart homes, hotels and offices. It is a dual-band design, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with no 6 GHz radio, and both radios are 2x2 MU-MIMO. Ruijie rate its 5 GHz coverage at 140 m², against 110 m² for the traditional Wi-Fi 6 devices they compare it with, and quote a lab-measured speed of 2,714 Mbps.

The Wi-Fi 7 features Ruijie list are Multi-Link Operation, which bonds the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to reduce lag, 4K QAM for up to 20% faster data speeds, preamble puncturing to make use of bandwidth in crowded environments by bypassing interference-prone channels, and Multiple Resource Units for efficiency when many devices are connected. Client devices must support Wi-Fi 7 themselves to use them.

To run the 2.5GbE port at full speed the switch port at the other end must also support 2.5 Gbps; on a Gigabit switch the link runs at 1 Gbps. The hardware maximum is 511 associated wireless clients with both bands enabled (64 on 2.4 GHz, 511 on 5 GHz). Ruijie also list Reyee Mesh to reduce cabling costs, WIO 3 AI-powered optimisation, a standalone AP portal and an installation heatmap. It is an indoor unit rated IP41 for 0°C to 40°C.

What you will need

A switch port and power. For the full 2.5 Gbps wired link choose a multi-gigabit port on your network switch; a Gigabit port will link at 1 Gbps. Maximum consumption is 14 W, so a standard 802.3af port on a PoE switch or a PoE injector is enough, though an injector must itself pass 2.5 Gbps if you want that speed. The alternative is a 12 V, 1.5 A DC adapter; Ruijie's page does not list box contents, so ask us whether one is supplied. Use Cat5e or better network cable for the run.

Does the RG-RAP72 need a PoE+ switch?

No. Its maximum consumption is 14 W, within the 15.4 W of a standard 802.3af port, and Ruijie list both PoE and PoE+ as supported. A 12 V DC adapter can be used instead.

Do I need a 2.5G switch for the RG-RAP72?

Not to make it work: the port is 10/100/1000/2500BASE-T, so it will link to a Gigabit switch at 1 Gbps. A 2.5G switch port is needed only if you want the wired link to run faster than 1 Gbps.

Is the RG-RAP72 tri-band?

No. It is dual-band, with up to 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz, and Ruijie's specification shows no 6 GHz radio. For 6 GHz see the tri-band RG-RAP73Pro.

What area does one RG-RAP72 cover?

Ruijie rate its 5 GHz coverage at 140 m². Walls, ceilings and interference reduce that in practice, so treat it as a guide and ask us if you want help working out how many units a building needs.

The hardware maximum is 511 associated wireless clients with both bands enabled (64 on 2.4 GHz, 511 on 5 GHz). Ruijie's own office example refers to 100+ concurrent connections.
