TP-Link Tapo Smart Home Guide

TP-Link Tapo is a smart home range controlled from one app: plugs, bulbs, spotlights, light strips, light switches, a hub, robot vacuums and cameras. Most Tapo plugs and bulbs connect straight to your Wi-Fi with no hub needed, while the Tapo light switches need a Tapo hub. Zenith Security Co is listed on TP-Link UK's where-to-buy page as a VAR Partner and Online Store, and every Tapo product below is on our site.

For Tapo security cameras, see the separate Tapo camera buying guide.

Switches, hub and heating

  • Tapo S210 (1-gang) and Tapo S220 (2-gang): 1-way smart light switches that need no neutral wire. Both need a Tapo hub.
  • Tapo H200: smart hub with chime and microSD storage. Its product page lists 64+4 devices. Check compatibility with the device you want to add.
  • Kasa KE100: smart thermostatic radiator valve. Its product page says it needs the Kasa KH100 hub, so check you have one before ordering.

How to choose Tapo smart home products

1. Start with what you want to control

Smart plugs are the easiest start: plug a lamp, fan or heater in and switch it from the app or on a schedule. Bulbs suit rooms where you want dimming or colour. Smart switches suit rooms where people still use the wall switch.

2. Check the fitting before buying bulbs

UK lights mostly use B22 bayonet or E27 screw bulbs, and many kitchens and bathrooms use GU10 spotlights. Take the old bulb out and check before ordering.

3. Plugs: with or without energy monitoring

The P110, P110M and P304M show how much power a device uses in the Tapo app, which helps when tracking running costs. The P100 is the simpler on/off plug.

4. Matter or not

Matter is a common smart home standard that lets devices work with several smart home platforms. If you use, or plan to use, a Matter platform, choose a model listed with Matter, such as the P110M or L535E.

5. Hub or no hub

Wi-Fi plugs and bulbs work with no hub. The S210 and S220 switches need a Tapo hub. The KE100 radiator valve needs the Kasa KH100 hub.

6. Check Wi-Fi coverage

Smart devices need a steady 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal where they are fitted. If the signal is weak in some rooms, see our Deco mesh Wi-Fi guide.

Setting up Tapo devices

Install the Tapo app, sign in with a TP-Link ID and add each device from the app. Plugs and bulbs join your home Wi-Fi directly. Add the hub first if you are fitting S210 or S220 switches, then add the switches to the hub. Once devices are in the app, you can group them by room, set schedules and timers, and link them to voice assistants where the product page lists support. Smart light switches replace a wall switch on mains wiring, so have them fitted by a qualified electrician.
