Buy the size that covers your camera count with realistic room to grow — expanding to a larger recorder later means replacing the whole unit, not just adding cameras.
PoE ports
Many Dahua NVRs have built-in PoE ports that power IP cameras directly over the same network cable that carries their video — no separate camera power supply needed. Check how many built-in PoE ports a model has against your camera count: cameras beyond that number need their own power, either from a separate PoE switch or individual supplies. A non-PoE NVR is a reasonable choice where a PoE switch is already in place or planned as part of the network.
WizSense or WizMind?
The same tier distinction as Dahua's cameras applies to recorders. WizSense NVRs run on-recorder AI detection and classification. WizMind NVRs add more processing power for recognition, people-counting, and smart search features such as AcuPick and WizSeek that let you search footage by event rather than scrubbing through it manually.
Drive bays
More bays mean more total storage capacity and longer retention before the oldest footage is overwritten. A single-bay compact recorder suits a small site with a modest retention requirement; multi-bay 1.5U, 2U and 3U models suit larger camera counts, higher resolutions, or a longer retention policy.
