Choosing a PTZ
- Optical zoom is the number that matters. A 4x mini PTZ such as the Hikvision DS-2DE2A404IW-DE3 covers a shop floor or reception; 15x models like the DS-2DE4A215IW-DE suit a yard; 25x and 32x speed domes — the DS-2DE4A425IW-DE, DS-2DE5432IW-AE and DS-2DE7232IW-AE — reach across a large car park or perimeter fence.
- Resolution. Most PTZs are 2 MP or 4 MP; 4 MP gives more detail when zoomed out, 2 MP models often perform better in low light. The resolution is in every product name below.
- Infrared range. An "I" in a Hikvision model number means built-in infrared; the 7-inch DS-2DE7 series reaches furthest, the 4-inch DS-2DE4 series is the compact all-rounder.
- Smart tracking. Auto-tracking locks the camera on to a moving target. It is a per-model feature rather than standard across the range, so ask us to confirm before you order.
- Special environments. The DS-2DT6223-AELY is anti-corrosion rated for coastal and chemical sites; the PanoVu models combine a 180° panoramic view with a PTZ in one housing.
Powering and mounting a PTZ
PTZ cameras draw more power than fixed cameras: most 4-inch models need 802.3at PoE+ and the 5- and 7-inch speed domes need Hi-PoE or a local 24 V supply — check the datasheet and size the PoE switch accordingly. Every PTZ also needs a bracket: wall, pendant and pole mounts are in CCTV accessories.
