HikCentral Professional Explained: From Version 2.0 to 3.0 and 50,000 Channels

HikCentral Professional is Hikvision's software for running CCTV, access control, alarms, visitors and vehicles from one platform, and since 2021 it has grown from version 2.0 to version 3.0, which supports up to 50,000 video channels with clustering and hot-standby failover. This guide pulls together Hikvision's HikCentral announcements from 2021 to 2025, plus the dedicated servers Hikvision launched to run it, so you can see what the platform does and when it makes sense.

What is HikCentral Professional?

An NVR is perfect for one building. Once you have several sites, hundreds of cameras, or need CCTV to work with door access, visitor booking, ANPR and alarms, you need a video management system (VMS). HikCentral Professional (often shortened to HCP) is Hikvision's VMS and integrated security platform. It brings live view, playback, alarms, access control and reporting into one interface on a server or PC.

How HikCentral has developed

HCP 2.0 (March 2021): one platform for security and business

  • Nine applications: video, alarms, access control (face, card, fingerprint, QR code), time and attendance with shift rules, visitor management, vehicle management, intelligent analysis and reports, system maintenance, and digital signage.
  • Joined-up workflows, for example registering a visitor so ANPR lets their car into the car park automatically.
  • A drag-and-drop dashboard, 3D e-maps, role-based views for HR, security and management, and one-click installation (from an Intel i3 and 8 GB RAM).

HCP 2.5 (January 2024): add-on apps and open integration

  • 15 optional add-ons from an App Market, including smart walls, parking lot management, attendance, on-board monitoring, portable enforcement, evidence management, AR, guard patrol, commercial display and security inspection.
  • A base package for video and access control that runs on an i3 CPU with 4 GB RAM.
  • OpenAPIs and support for ONVIF, BACnet and SIA to connect third-party cameras, alarm panels, building management and HVAC systems.

HCP 3.0 (April 2025): built for very large systems

  • Up to 20,000 video channels per server, double the previous 10,000.
  • Clustering: one master server plus up to five slave servers, supporting up to 55,000 devices and 50,000 video channels.
  • Hot-standby failover servers that take over immediately if a server fails.
  • Load-balanced streaming, so video stays smooth at busy times.
  • An external PostgreSQL database handling billions of records, with hot backups.

Since 2025, HikCentral Professional has also gained AcuSeek AI search, so operators can find people and vehicles by typing a description.

Hikvision general purpose servers (March 2025)

To run larger HikCentral systems, Hikvision launched its own tower workstations (industrial-grade, with wide temperature range and shock and dust resistance) and rackmount servers (ECC memory, enterprise hard drives and a server operating system). Options include HDD and SSD storage, GPUs, RAID and network cards. Hikvision tests each configuration with its software and backs them with Platinum After-Sales Service, including 24/7 remote support.

Who needs HikCentral?

  • Multi-site businesses such as retail chains and banks that want one view of every branch.
  • Large single sites such as campuses, hospitals, logistics parks and factories.
  • Residential and mixed-use developments combining CCTV, door entry, visitors and parking.
  • Control rooms that need video walls, maps and alarm handling.

For a single shop, office or home, a standalone NVR with Hik-Connect is usually simpler.

Building a HikCentral system

HikCentral works with Hikvision cameras and recorders, access control and intercom. Start with the hardware: browse our Hikvision NVRs, DeepinView cameras and ANPR cameras. HikCentral licences and servers are project items, so contact us with your camera count and sites and we'll help you scope it.

Our take

HikCentral has moved from "CCTV software" to a full operations platform. Version 3.0's clustering and failover put it firmly into enterprise territory, while the add-on model in 2.5 keeps it affordable for mid-size sites that only need video and access control to start with.
