Hikvision Dual-Lens Passenger Counting Camera Gains ITxPT Certification

Hikvision's Dual-Lens Passenger Counting Camera, the DS-2XM6825G1, has gained ITxPT certification, so it can plug into the standardised onboard IT systems used by bus and rail operators across Europe. Announced on 27 May 2026, it's a specialist product, but the technology behind it, 3D stereo-vision people counting, is worth understanding for anyone who needs accurate footfall figures. Here's what ITxPT means, how dual-lens counting works, and where people counting helps.

What is ITxPT?

ITxPT (Information Technology for Public Transport) is a widely used European standard for onboard IT on buses, trams and trains. It sets out a common architecture, data formats and ways for devices to talk to each other, so an operator can mix equipment from different manufacturers in one vehicle and still get data in a consistent format. Certification confirms that a device works with ITxPT-compliant systems. In European transit tenders, it's often a requirement for a device to be approved at all.

How dual-lens passenger counting works

A normal camera sees a flat picture, so it can struggle to tell two people close together apart, or a bag from a child. A dual-lens (stereo vision) camera has two lenses a short distance apart, much like a pair of eyes. By comparing the two views it builds a 3D picture of the scene and measures the height and shape of what passes underneath. That's what makes it accurate. Hikvision lists these features for the DS-2XM6825G1:

  • 3D perception that recognises people and also strollers, bicycles and wheelchairs.
  • Over 98% counting accuracy, according to Hikvision. Someone is only counted once they've fully boarded or left, so people hovering near the doors aren't double-counted.
  • Flexible mounting from a minimum height of 1.9 metres, to suit city buses, metro carriages and articulated coaches.
  • Broad protocol support, with ITxPT, ONVIF, RS-485, Hikvision SDK, door-signal integration and multiple streaming formats.
  • A tough build, with IP66 and IK08 ratings and an operating range of −30°C to 75°C.

Data can be shown and exported by bus, route and stop.

What it can do for transport operators

  • Better timetables and capacity. Real boarding numbers by stop and time show where to add or remove services.
  • Safety. Better visibility inside the vehicle and at the doors helps manage crowding.
  • Accessibility. Knowing how often wheelchairs and pushchairs board helps operators plan space and vehicle choice.
  • Mixed-brand fleets. ITxPT means the counting data fits into the operator's existing onboard systems, even when other equipment comes from other manufacturers.

People counting beyond buses

The same idea, counting people accurately at an entrance, is used well beyond public transport:

  • Shops measure footfall and compare it with sales to work out conversion rates and plan staffing.
  • Offices and venues track occupancy against fire and capacity limits.
  • Leisure centres, libraries and attractions report visitor numbers to funders.

For buildings, Hikvision's DeepinView cameras include people counting among their deep-learning analytics, and some other Hikvision cameras offer people counting too; check the product page for the exact model. If you need footfall figures for a shop or office, tell us about the entrance and we'll suggest a suitable camera.

Our take

This one is mainly for transport operators and the specialist integrators who equip their fleets. It's a good example of where CCTV is heading, though: cameras are now as much sensors that produce data as they are recorders of video. Stereo vision is one of the more reliable ways to count people, and ITxPT certification makes it practical for European fleets.

Quick questions

What does ITxPT stand for?
Information Technology for Public Transport, a European standard for onboard IT architecture, interoperability and data on buses and trains.

How accurate is dual-lens people counting?
Hikvision quotes over 98% for the DS-2XM6825G1. Stereo vision is generally more accurate than single-lens counting because it measures depth.

Can it tell people from wheelchairs and pushchairs?
Yes. Hikvision says the 3D perception identifies strollers, bicycles and wheelchairs as well as people.

Do you stock the DS-2XM6825G1?
It's a specialist onboard product. Contact us if you have a transport project and we'll check availability.
