Dahua DSS Professional V8.7 and DSS OneBox: Video Management Made Simpler

DSS Professional is Dahua's video management software (VMS) for running CCTV, access control, parking, visitors and alarms from one platform. Versions 8.5 to 8.7 (2024–2025) added AR monitoring, AI text search, palm-vein access and wider third-party support, and the DSS OneBox, launched in July 2025, puts the whole system in a palm-sized workstation. Here's what DSS Professional does, what each release changed and when a VMS makes sense over a recorder alone.

When do you need a VMS?

A single NVR handles a small site well. Once you have several recorders, more than one building, access control, barriers or a control room, a VMS brings everything into one interface: one map, one alarm list, one search and one set of user permissions.

What changed in DSS Professional

V8.5 (July 2024)

  • A clearer interface with higher contrast.
  • AR monitoring: labels and markers placed on the live view, so operators can see what's where.
  • Generic third-party event alarms and RTSP device support.
  • Visitor self-booking with approval steps, barrier-free parking and main and sub car-park set-ups.

V8.6 (January 2025)

  • Tagging footage during live view and playback, and visual tracking of a person across neighbouring cameras.
  • DeepXplore, which analyses recordings from third-party and non-AI cameras to make them searchable.
  • Counting and dwell-time statistics.
  • Access by face, QR code and ID card, plus DESFire card writing.
  • ONVIF Profiles G, S, T and M, and BACnet, SIA, Modbus and SNMP support.

V8.7 (August 2025)

  • Granular user permissions with time restrictions.
  • Text-to-image search for people, vehicles and bikes, plus image search with AcuPick.
  • Palm-vein recognition for access control.
  • More ONVIF events (tripwire, intrusion, abandoned objects, loitering, scene change) and an online API test tool covering more than 150 APIs.

Working with other systems

Dahua built a Bridge plug-in so DSS Professional (V8.4 and above) can work with Nedap AEOS access control, syncing doors and cardholders and verifying alarms on video. Earlier, in 2021, Dahua opened its NVRs to third-party apps through NVR DHOP and listed integrations with Milestone, Axxon and Digifort.

DSS OneBox (July 2025)

  • A desktop workstation just 117 × 117 × 42mm and 0.52kg.
  • Intel Core i7 with 32GB of memory, driving four 4K screens and decoding up to 30 channels of 1080p.
  • Software and licences pre-installed, with auto-start and auto-login.
  • DSS Mobile remote access without a fixed public IP address.
  • Covers security monitoring, personnel access and vehicle access in one box.

We stock the DH-DSS-OneBox-H1/128 all-in-one VMS workstation. Pair it with Dahua Pro or Ultra NVRs, a network keyboard and monitors. See our Dahua NVR buying guide.

Our take

DSS Professional has steadily moved from a viewing client towards a full building-security platform, and the OneBox removes the server-room cost that used to put small multi-site businesses off. If you're juggling several recorders and an access system, it's worth a demo.
