How to set up Dahua P2P remote viewing

Applies to: Dahua NVRs, XVRs and IP cameras with P2P support. Menu names vary slightly between firmware versions.

Quick answer: Connect the recorder to your router, then open Network > P2P on the recorder and tick Enable. When the status reads Online, scan the QR code shown there with the DMSS app, or enter the serial number in SmartPSS Lite, and log in with the device password. No port forwarding is needed.

P2P is Dahua's way of letting you view your cameras from anywhere without changing router settings. The recorder makes an outgoing connection to Dahua's servers, and your phone or PC finds it through the device serial number.

It suits most homes and small businesses, because it works behind most broadband routers and avoids opening ports to the internet. This guide covers enabling P2P, connecting a phone and PC, and keeping the connection secure.

Before you start

  • The recorder connected to your router by network cable
  • Internet access at the site with a reasonable upload speed (this sets how smooth remote viewing will be)
  • A monitor and mouse on the recorder, or its web interface
  • The admin password, and DMSS or SmartPSS Lite installed

Step 1: Connect the recorder to the network

  1. Plug a network cable from the recorder's LAN port into your router.
  2. In the network or TCP/IP settings, switch on DHCP so the router gives it an address.
  3. Check the DNS fields are filled in. If they are blank, enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
  4. Apply the settings.

Step 2: Enable P2P

  1. Open the P2P page (on many models Main Menu > Network > P2P; on some newer interfaces it sits under a cloud or platform access heading).
  2. Tick Enable and apply.
  3. Wait a minute or two and check the status changes to Online.
  4. Note the serial number and keep the QR code on screen for the next step.

Some firmware shows a privacy notice when P2P is first switched on. Read it and accept only if you are happy with the service.

Step 3: Connect your phone

  1. Open DMSS and tap +.
  2. Scan the QR code from the P2P page or the device label.
  3. Name the device and enter the username and password.
  4. Save, then tap a camera to check live view.

Step 4: Connect a PC

  1. Open SmartPSS Lite and go to Devices.
  2. Click Add and choose SN or P2P.
  3. Enter the serial number, username and password.
  4. Open Live View and drag the device onto the screen.

Keeping remote access secure

  • Use a strong, unique device password and change it if anyone who knew it leaves.
  • Create separate user accounts with limited rights for staff or family rather than sharing admin.
  • Keep firmware up to date.
  • Turn off P2P if you stop using remote viewing.
  • Review the user list on the recorder from time to time and remove accounts nobody uses.

P2P or port forwarding?

Port forwarding with DDNS gives a direct connection and can feel quicker, but it needs router changes and opens a port to the internet. P2P needs no router work and suits most homes and small sites. If you are unsure, start with P2P.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need port forwarding for Dahua P2P?

No. P2P works through an outgoing connection from the recorder, so you do not need to open ports on your router.

Is Dahua P2P secure?

P2P avoids opening ports, which lowers exposure. Its security still depends on a strong password and up-to-date firmware.

Where do I find the serial number?

It is on the label on the recorder and on the P2P page in the network settings.

Can I use P2P and port forwarding together?

Yes, but most sites only need one. P2P is simpler to set up and maintain.

Does P2P work on 4G routers?

Often, yes, as P2P copes with most router types. Upload speed and data allowance on 4G can limit viewing.

Can Zenith Security Co. set up P2P for me?
