Hikvision LED Displays: 5th-Generation Cabinet, COB Technology and 8K LED

Hikvision has been making LED video walls for more than a decade, and in 2024–25 it overhauled the range: a 5th-generation LED cabinet that's 29.3mm thin and 17kg/m², one platform for COB, HOB and SMD LED technology, TÜV Rheinland Green Product Mark certification, and an 8K COB LED centrepiece at ISE 2025. Here's what those terms mean, what the new cabinets offer, and where LED displays are used.

LED display basics

An LED video wall is made of cabinets (panels) fitted with lamp boards of tiny LEDs. They join seamlessly into a screen of almost any size, are much brighter than LCD screens, and suit lobbies, shop windows, control rooms, stages and outdoor signs. The pixel pitch (distance between LEDs) decides how close viewers can stand: a smaller pitch gives a sharper image up close.

The three LED packaging technologies Hikvision now supports on one platform:

  • SMD (surface-mount device): the established, cost-effective standard.
  • COB (chip on board): LEDs sealed directly on the board, giving fine pitch, high contrast and toughness against knocks. It's used on Hikvision's Ultra series and its 8K screen.
  • HOB (Hikvision glue on board): Hikvision's own protected-board design. Hikvision offers HOB lamp-board repair at local service centres.

The 5th-generation LED cabinet (May 2024)

  • 29.3mm thin and 17kg/m², making it lighter and easier to install.
  • Big-board design with fewer seams and fewer lamp boards, which Hikvision says reduces the risk of LEDs being knocked off.
  • 16:9 cabinets (600 × 337.5mm) that build neatly into Full HD and 4K resolutions.
  • Strong enough to splice 50 rows up to 17m high without deforming, with up to 2,000N tensile strength.
  • Horizontal or vertical wiring and a removable back plate for tidy cabling.
  • One platform for COB, HOB and SMD, plus swappable pixel pitches on the Ultra series and single-cabinet colour calibration.

At its June 2024 launch, Hikvision also upgraded its LED controllers (C series and flagship P series), video wall controllers and LED software, and launched outdoor and creative-shape displays.

Greener displays: TÜV Rheinland Green Product Mark (October 2024)

Sixteen Hikvision LED display products, including the CW and BW series, were awarded the TÜV Rheinland Green Product Mark, which Hikvision says was a first for the LED display industry. The assessment covers technical compliance, restricted substances, carbon footprint and recyclability.

8K COB LED at ISE 2025

At ISE 2025 in Barcelona, Hikvision's stand was built around a new 8K COB LED screen, alongside WonderHub interactive displays and retail signage such as high-brightness window displays and self-service ordering kiosks.

Where LED video walls are used

  • Control rooms: CCTV, maps and data on one seamless wall.
  • Reception and lobbies: branding and welcome messages.
  • Retail: window promotions and in-store campaigns.
  • Conference rooms, auditoriums and theatres.
  • Outdoor advertising and stadiums.

LED walls also fit into Hikvision's wider ProAV range.

Our take

Hikvision's LED business is less well known than its cameras, but the 5th-generation cabinet shows real attention to the things installers care about: weight, wiring, seams and spares. The single platform for three LED technologies is a smart move for anyone who has struggled to get matching replacement panels years after installation.

Quick questions

What is COB LED?
Chip on board: LEDs mounted and sealed directly on the board, giving fine pixel pitch, high contrast and better protection.

What is pixel pitch?
The distance between LED pixels. Smaller pitches look sharper up close; larger pitches suit long viewing distances.

How heavy is Hikvision's 5th-generation cabinet?
About 17kg per square metre, with a 29.3mm thin structure.

What is the TÜV Rheinland Green Product Mark?
An environmental certification covering restricted substances, carbon footprint and recyclability.
