How to update Dahua NVR and camera firmware safely

Applies to: Dahua NVRs, XVRs and IP cameras. Firmware files are model-specific and upgrade menus differ between firmware versions.

Quick answer: Find the exact model and current firmware version in the system information screen. Download the matching firmware only from Dahua's official site or your supplier. Then upgrade through the recorder's local menu with a USB stick, the web interface, ConfigTool or the online upgrade option. Keep the power on until the device restarts by itself.

Firmware updates fix bugs, close security holes and sometimes add features. They are worth doing, but they are also the one routine job where a mistake can leave a recorder or camera unusable.

The two rules that matter are simple: use the firmware made for your exact model, and never cut the power during an upgrade. This guide covers the main methods Dahua devices support and how to prepare for each.

Before you start

  • The exact model number and current firmware version, from Main Menu > Info > Version or similar, or the web interface's system information
  • The firmware file for that model, from Dahua's official download pages or your supplier
  • A USB stick formatted as FAT32 if you are upgrading from the local menu
  • A stable power supply; a UPS is sensible for business sites
  • A note of your settings, or a configuration backup if your firmware offers one

Step 1: Check whether you need an update

If the system is stable and secure, an update is not urgent. Update when a new version fixes a problem you have, adds a feature you need, or addresses a security issue. Read the release notes before you start.

Step 2: Get the right file

  1. Match the full model number, including any suffix letters. A file for a similar model can fail or damage the device.
  2. Download from an official source. Some firmware is region-specific, so check it suits UK or European devices.
  3. If the file arrives zipped, extract it. The upgrade file itself is commonly a .bin file.
  4. Check the release notes for a required upgrade path. Some older versions must go through an intermediate version first.

Method 1: USB stick on the recorder

  1. Copy the firmware file to the root of the USB stick.
  2. Plug the stick into the recorder's USB port.
  3. Open the system maintenance or upgrade page (often under Main Menu > System > Upgrade or Maintain > Update).
  4. Select the file and start the upgrade.
  5. Wait. Do not unplug the stick or the power. The recorder restarts when it finishes.

Method 2: Web interface

  1. Log in to the device's web interface from a PC on the same network.
  2. Open the upgrade page under system or maintenance settings.
  3. Browse to the file, start the upgrade and keep the browser open until the device reboots.

Other methods: ConfigTool, SmartPSS Lite and online upgrade

Dahua's ConfigTool can upgrade several devices on a network, which helps with cameras. SmartPSS Lite can also push firmware on some versions. Newer devices may offer an online upgrade that checks Dahua's servers directly; this normally needs P2P online and, in DMSS, a Dahua account.

After the update

  • Check the version number has changed.
  • Check every camera is live and recording.
  • Check remote viewing in DMSS and SmartPSS Lite.
  • If behaviour is odd, Dahua sometimes advises restoring default settings after a major upgrade. Back up settings first.

Frequently asked questions

Will a firmware update delete my recordings?

Usually not, but it is not guaranteed. Back up any footage you need to keep before you start.

How long does a Dahua firmware update take?

It varies by device and file size, often a few minutes. Wait for the device to restart by itself.

Can I update Dahua firmware with DMSS?

Some devices support an online upgrade through DMSS when signed in to a Dahua account and online through P2P.

What happens if the power cuts out during an update?

The device may fail to start. This is why a stable power supply matters. Contact your supplier with the model and serial number if it happens.

Should I update the cameras or the recorder first?

There is no fixed rule. Check the release notes, and update one device at a time so any problem is easy to trace.
