TP-Link Omada Router and Gateway Guide

An Omada router (TP-Link calls them gateways) connects a business network to the internet and ties Omada switches and access points together. Choose an ER wired VPN router for fibre or cable broadband, a DR router where the line is VDSL, a 4G or 5G gateway where there is no fixed line or you want failover, and a Fusion gateway if you want the router and Omada controller in one box. Zenith Security Co is listed on TP-Link UK's where-to-buy page as a VAR Partner and Online Store, and every model below is on our site.

Omada controllers

A controller manages every Omada router, switch and access point on a site from one place. The OC200 is recommended for 25 devices. The OC300 manages up to 500 access points, 100 switches and 100 routers. The OC400 manages up to 1,000 access points, 200 switches and 100 routers, with dual power supplies. The Fusion gateways have a controller built in, and Omada also offers cloud management.

How to choose an Omada router or gateway

1. Start with the internet connection

Ethernet from a fibre ONT or cable modem suits the ER and Fusion ranges. A VDSL line needs a DR router, which has the modem built in. No fixed line, or a temporary site, points to a 4G or 5G gateway.

2. Match the WAN speed

If the broadband is faster than 1 Gbps, choose a model with a 2.5G or 10G WAN, such as the ER707-M2, ER7412-M2, Fusion 2.5G or ER8411.

3. Plan for failover

If the business cannot be offline, use a second line or a mobile backup. The ER605, ER7206, ER706W and DR3150 list USB 4G backup. The ER706W-4G, ER706WP-4G, DR3650V-4G and DR3220V-4G have 4G built in.

4. Count VPN users and sites

For remote staff or linking branches, compare the IPsec throughput on each product page. The ER8411 lists 3 Gbps and the ER7412-M2 lists 1133.1 Mbps.

5. Decide on built-in Wi-Fi, PoE and phones

The ER706W and the 4G W models include Wi-Fi 6. The ER706WP-4G and Fusion 2.5G PoE can power access points or cameras. The DR3650V range has FXS ports for analogue phones on a VoIP service.

6. Outdoor mounting

Outdoor gateways sit where the mobile signal is better and run a single cable back inside, which helps in steel buildings and rural sites.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Omada gateway?

It is TP-Link's name for an Omada business router. It connects the site to the internet and can be managed with Omada switches and access points from one controller.

Which Omada router is right for a small office?

The ER605 suits many small offices: gigabit, 3 WAN ports, 4G dongle backup and VPN. If you also want Wi-Fi from the same box, look at the ER706W.

What is Omada Fusion?

Fusion gateways combine a router and an Omada controller in one device with a touchscreen. We sell the Fusion G+, Fusion 2.5G and Fusion 2.5G PoE.

Do I need an Omada controller with an ER router?

A controller lets you manage the router, switches and access points together. Use an OC200, OC300 or OC400, a Fusion gateway, or Omada's cloud management.

Which Omada router works on a VDSL line?

The DR3150, DR3650V, DR3650V-4G and DR3220V-4G have VDSL built in, up to 350 Mbps on the product pages.

Can an Omada router fail over to 4G?

Yes. The ER706W-4G, ER706WP-4G, DR3650V-4G and DR3220V-4G have 4G built in, and the ER605, ER7206, ER706W and DR3150 support a USB 4G backup.
