Dahua Thermal and Radar: Perimeter Protection, Early Fire Detection and Inspection

Dahua's thermal products cover three jobs: perimeter protection in total darkness and bad weather (Eureka thermal cameras and radar-linked systems), early fire detection by spotting heat before smoke (thermal hybrid cameras for waste and storage sites), and hand-held inspection (thermography cameras and monoculars). This guide brings together Dahua's thermal and radar news from 2021 and 2022, explains how each technology works and who it helps.

How thermal cameras work

A thermal camera sees heat, not light. People, vehicles and hot equipment stand out against cooler backgrounds whether it's pitch dark, foggy, smoky or raining lightly. That makes thermal well suited to long perimeters and to spotting temperature problems that a normal camera can't see.

Perimeter protection

Eureka thermal cameras (January 2021)

Dahua's third-generation entry-level thermal range was aimed at short-range perimeters such as factories, car parks, warehouses, recycling yards and car dealerships. When an intruder is detected, the camera can trigger a white light and loudspeaker warning, record and send snapshots. Dahua positioned it as a visual alternative to electric fences, fibre sensors and infrared beams, with fewer false alarms.

Radar perimeter protection (June 2022)

  • Security radar with a 90° or 120° horizontal detection angle, working day and night in rain, fog and snow.
  • Radar reports each target's speed, angle and distance and shows its track.
  • PTZ cameras slew automatically to what the radar detects: one radar can drive several PTZs, or several radars one PTZ.
  • Thermal cameras for high-risk zones, all managed in DSS Pro.
  • Typical sites include substations, chemical warehouses, car parks, airports, data centres and resorts.

Early fire detection (August 2021)

Fires at waste and recycling sites often start deep inside a pile, out of sight. Dahua's Eureka thermal hybrid cameras watch for abnormal temperature rises (for example above 80°C) at 1–15m indoors and raise the alarm with a light and siren before smoke appears. Dahua also lists:

  • Locating a fire through smoke using thermal imaging.
  • Smoking detection, which recognises posture and cigarette heat in no-smoking zones.
  • Machinery overheating alerts for conveyors, bearings and motors.

Hand-held thermal (2022)

  • DH-TPC-HI20 thermography camera: 256 × 192 resolution, laser pointer, temperature alarms, IP54 and 2m drop-proof, for electrical, HVAC, building and vehicle inspections.
  • M20, M40 and M60 thermal monoculars: 640 × 512, 12μm sensor, IP67, up to 9 hours' battery, and Dahua quotes fire detection at up to 1km for a 2m × 2m fire. They're aimed at outdoor, wildlife and search work.

Camera-based fire detection supports, but doesn't replace, a certified fire alarm system, so always follow your fire risk assessment. See all thermal cameras or the Dahua range.

Our take

Thermal is the tool for jobs normal cameras can't do: long, dark perimeters and hidden heat. For waste sites, warehouses and anywhere with batteries or machinery, the early warning can be the difference between a hot spot and a full-scale fire. Pairing thermal or radar detection with a PTZ gives you both the alert and the evidence.

Quick questions

Can thermal cameras see in total darkness?
Yes. They detect heat, so they work without any light, and through light fog and smoke.

Can a thermal camera detect fire before smoke?
Yes. Thermal cameras can spot rising temperatures before smoke is produced. They add early warning but don't replace a fire alarm.

What does radar add to CCTV?
Radar detects movement over a wide area in any weather and gives speed, distance and direction, which can steer PTZ cameras to the target.

What is a dual-lens thermal camera?
A camera with both a thermal and a visible lens, so you see the heat image and the normal picture together.
