Dahua's PT (pan-tilt) and PTZ cameras let one camera cover what used to need several. Its 2025 PT range turns 360° horizontally with up to 300 presets and auto tracking, while its WizSense PTZ cameras gained auto patrol, AcuPick search and construction-site detection in 2024, built on Dahua's Auto Tracking 3.0. Here's how moving cameras have changed, what the technology does and how to choose between PT, PTZ and fixed cameras.
PT vs PTZ: what's the difference?
- PT (pan-tilt) cameras rotate and tilt but use a fixed lens, sometimes with digital zoom. They're compact, affordable and aimed at small businesses.
- PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras add a motorised optical zoom, from 5x up to 45x, so they can read detail hundreds of metres away. They suit car parks, yards, perimeters and large sites.
Dahua PT cameras for small businesses (May 2025)
- 360° horizontal and 90° vertical movement removes the blind spots of fixed cameras.
- Up to 300 presets, so the camera can jump straight to the till, the door or the stockroom.
- Remote set-up: angle and zoom can be adjusted from the DMSS app or recorder, and a 2-in-1 bracket mounts on a wall or ceiling, which cuts time on site.
- Auto Tracking and Linkage Tracking: once Smart Motion Detection spots a person or vehicle, the camera follows it, even when it's partly hidden.
- Dahua also announced an upcoming one-click lock and tiered PTZ permissions, so staff can't knock the camera out of position.
WizSense PTZ upgrades (March 2024)
- Auto Patrol cycles through up to five key presets and raises an alarm if Smart Motion Detection spots movement.
- AcuPick search finds people and vehicles in recordings.
- Construction detection spots lone working, missing PPE (helmets, masks, vests, gloves, boots and overalls) and long periods of inactivity.
- People counting for entries, exits and occupancy.
- Hardware updates: 10x optical zoom on the compact SD3E series, infrared range on the SD29 series extended from 30m to 50m, and longer-lasting cables that Dahua says withstand 4 to 5 times more rotations.
Auto Tracking 3.0: how a PTZ follows a target
Keeping a moving target centred and in focus while zooming is hard. Dahua's Auto Tracking 3.0 (2022) combines five algorithms: PFA 3.0 focus, speed-adaptive rotation and zoom, position-adaptive framing, DPT long-distance tracking (up to 1,500m in ideal conditions) and interference filtering for occlusion and lighting changes. It tracks people and vehicles, and with custom firmware ships and aircraft.
Which should you choose?
- Small shop, office or home: a PT camera gives full-room coverage from one point.
- Car park, yard or industrial site: a PTZ with optical zoom and auto tracking, ideally paired with fixed cameras so the overall view is always recorded.
- Construction site: a PTZ with PPE detection and auto patrol, or a 4G model where there's no network.

Our take
PT cameras have brought moving-camera coverage to small sites at a sensible price, while PTZs have become smarter about what they follow. The golden rule still applies: a PTZ only records where it's pointing, so pair it with at least one fixed camera covering the same area.

Quick questions
What's the difference between a PT and a PTZ camera?
Both pan and tilt; a PTZ also has a motorised optical zoom for long-distance detail.
What is auto tracking?
The camera detects a person or vehicle and moves to keep it in view automatically.
How many presets does Dahua's PT camera support?
Up to 300, according to Dahua.
Can a PTZ detect missing hard hats?
Dahua's 2024 WizSense PTZ update added PPE detection for helmets, vests and other workwear on supported models.
