DECT phones are cordless phones that use the DECT standard, short for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications. In a DECT IP phone system, one or more handsets connect by radio to a base station, and the base station connects to your network and registers with your phone system or VoIP service. The result is a cordless VoIP phone you can carry around the office or site. DECT uses its own radio band, so it does not depend on your Wi-Fi.

Wireless IP phones also include Wi-Fi phones, which join your Wi-Fi network directly and need no DECT base station.

Before you choose, check:

• DECT or Wi-Fi: a Wi-Fi phone relies on your Wi-Fi coverage and settings;
• a single base station for a small site, or a multi-cell system with several base stations for a larger building, with DECT repeaters to extend coverage;
• how many handsets and SIP accounts the base station supports;
• handset type, including rugged handsets, and battery talk time;
• whether it works with your phone system or VoIP service.
